Greetings Saab Owners,
I would really appreciate some input on an ongoing starting issue I have with a 100k 2001 Saab 93 2.2 diesel.
Symptoms: Difficult to cold start, even above 3-5 degrees. Engine may or may not enter reduced performance mode for up to 10 minutes and only following cold start.
Action taken:
• Parking on a slope helped cold start issue.
• Replacing spill pipes helped cold start issue.
Other than this starting issue MPG and performance is good.
Have not checked EGR or MAF up to this point. From what I have read these would not affect cold starting and given the MPG and performance is good.
Is there a guide on how to pressure test the fuel system to be 100% confident there are no leaks.
Suggested actions so far include:
Check/replace CPS
Check Injector washers
Check glow plugs
Other than the original Saab diags what 3rd party tools can query ECU over the OBD2 port?
Once again, would really appreciate some advice from people more experienced than I. The car is now with a garage as I do not have experience or facilities to progress this.
Thank you
Sven.
Welcome! :)
Does your garage have a Saab "Tech 2" diagnostic computer? I think it might need to be checked with one of these because diesel engines were not required to comply with the On Board Diagnostic error code system until 2004. Some cars complied a bit earlier, but I do not think that Saab was one.
So a generic code reader will probably not work.
I don't have any experience of modern diesels, so I'm not the best person to advise you any further...
I'd be looking at glow plugs as a possible culprit, the relay system for feeding them can also fail. Both faults should lodge some fault codes that can be read with Tech-2.
