Title: Need more boost
Post by: nine-fiver on 11 March 2014, 07:23:43 AM
Now that the Estate is back on the road after the noisy demise of the water pump and pulleys, it seems a bit of boost has gone missing too.
The car is feeling a bit 'choked up' when asking for some zip. Wondering if I can test the wiring into the controller that sits above the turbo? The plug is not all that great, with a bit missing from it. What can be done to test its operation? Failing that it could be the vacuum bypass valve, as that is hooting a bit every now and then.

Suggestions welcome gents.

Turns out it was a piece of plastic blocking the fuel pickup, keeping the fuel pressure down.
Took out the pickup and dismantled it back to the pump, which was replaced a few years back. The lingering issue remains, that I put in a new pump after the old one burned out, and had to use a length of fuel line that turns out cannot sustain being immersed in fuel for more than 12 months.
So, how do I get my hands on the proper fuel line, then?

Morning
I've used Fuel Injection High Pressure hose inside the fuel tank. I got it at the auto parts store in town.
It was still working fine at 267k until I wrapped it around a telephone pole :'(

Thanks,
In the middle of nowhere for a few weeks, travelling North to Alice. Not in the 9-5 though, you might guess. But in a Nissan Pathfinder towing a camper trailer. Even that has had a few issues, which surprised me, given the super reliable nature of them out here. Spitting oil from a loose clamp from the turbo to the intercooler. Nice too that my Saab turbo knowledge helped figure it all out on the diesel side of things.

So....there on the side of the road was a little white E30 318 looking all forlorn, 200km from the nearest town in either direction on the Highway. Bonnet up, heads in engine bay. The two young guys from up your way had NO idea and the fan belt was wrapped badly around the pulleys. Yes, the temp needle was in the red, for over 20 minutes before they pulled over. Hope the head isn't warped. So we bundled them into the other car and set off to Coober Pedy, in the hope that they could get a new belt. Fitting it would be another issue though as the car was back where it was left.

What WERE they thinking, driving a 20 year old bimmer, already worn out, around Aus, and how far did they think they would get? No tools, no water for them or for the car. And in the camp site next to me is another pair. I had to hold myself back from asking to check out their car....

You know where this is going....

Going to Coober Pedy, they should be driving an Opel (sorry bad joke)  ::)

Good one.

I got that. Our Aus connections come in handy now and again.  :)

Pity too about Opel pulling out of Oz and so soon after they landed. Can't understand it myself. Good looking cars that quite a few locals thought highly of. Particularly the three door hottty.

Hi nine-fiver, you have to remember that up here we don't always see the same cars as you with the same names.
I remember on my first trip in 88 being confused seeing what we know as Nissans, Fords, Renaults, Suzukis, (and others) being badged something completely different. You'll have to be a bit more precise than three door hotty!
:)
