Title: Remote issue....
Post by: DelticDaz on 07 May 2014, 12:40:43 PM
All fine till yesterday.....car wouldn't unlock via remote after numerous attempts, so key out, passenger door unlocked, key in ignition and started no problems, locked it, unlocked it, locked it a few times no problems, left overnight and same happened again, both remotes are the same, had car nearly 3 years no previous issues or error messages, never changed batteries in remotes, is it time to change batteries despite no replace battery error message or something else......?

The fault may not be with the key fob. Sounds like it could be the cars remote receiver starting to play up.

Does this only happen in the same place?  It could be outside interference. I could not use my remote on one construction site where there was a lot of electrical interference and a tube line right below the  road.  Radio hams and the old CB diehards can cause problems too.

Hmmmmm....all works fine stood next to car but soon as I walk away from car then fobs dont work.?

If it does the same a mile down the road, it points more to the receiver in the car.

Ok thanks...is this an easy DIY fix or a dealer fix....?

I think receiver is located under the centre console, to the rear, behind the vents. DIY fix if competent.

The receiver is in the back of the centre console.  Replacement is DIY as far as I can see. No Tech2 required.  Lift off back of centre console with the vents.

The car should tell you when to change batteries.  Message on the dash display. But it goes away if ignored for long enough.  So changing a fob battery would be a first step.

Changed the batteries on both remotes but still the same......presume the receiver is just unplu and plug new reciever in...?

So t seems, but there's a comment in the workshop manual that you may have to cut some of the tape that binds the wiring loom to enable access, and then tape it up a bit afterwards, but no so much that the new unit can't fit in the clips.

Thanks everyone......great help.....I'll change the receiver and hope that cures problem.

Could be the main battery. I had something similar about 4 weeks back. Both remotes completely failed to work unlocking the door but were good in the ignition. In my case, I had to disconnect the main battery to get the remote locking working. A couple of weeks later, I replaced the main battery because it was flat. Lets see if the problem returns.

Disconnected battery for a few hours which seemed to cure problem, just tried it again and problem still exits.. :-[
How do I remove center console vents to get at the receiver...?

I'm not sure that the receiver is in the centre console, my copy of WIS shows it's integrated into the CIM module which is the module where the indicator switches are but that the receiver is between the seats in a 9-5. If it is a receiver problem that's causing the issue then it might be replacement of the CIM is the only option although some people offer to refurbish them.

What year is your car?  The newer CIM units are a bit cheaper.

Maybe worth talking to ECU Testing and BBA Reman.  They might repair yours.

Here's a link.

But speak to ECU Testing too.  http://www.ecutesting.com/   They usually do all the same stuff but cheaper.

Not sure who you spoke to but whoever gave you that quote is having a laugh, a brand new genuine CIM is available for about £250, even if you allowed 1 hour of fitting at £100 and an £50 Tech-2 fee then you're looking at £400. Saab quote 0.7 hours to replace a CIM which would include programming and clearing of codes so I'd expect it to not be any more than this.

That was the thought that crossed my mind. I haven't had a chance to check the EPC this morning, but I remember the price dropping.  I think that there are a couple of CIMs available depending on whether your car is petrol or diesel.  There are another couple for cars without electronic stability, but I don't think any of those came to the UK.  Could be wrong though.

Do you need new keys? when you program a cim unit you can reuse old keys or add new ones, you don't need to replace them.

Anyway there's about 3 or 4 different CIM modules for the UK, there was a rationalisation a few years back, the early cars had a choice of traction or ESP which is one difference and because of that early cars can have a choice and the TCS module is more expensive, but every car post-2006 (possibly 2007) is the same module as far as I am aware.

There seems to be three "sets" of CIM.

2002-2004  Several versions All replaced by the 2004 model.
2005-2010  All previous versions replaced by the 2009/10 model.
2011 model.

Then another lot labelled with "ESP"

If your car is a 2007 model you would have one of three CIMs.

This one with no ESP (unlikely that you have this):

Article : Electric Module
PartNo : 12769671
Usage : 2007, AU, EU, GB, LA, 433, 92 MHZ, NLS-USE 12842076
Order Quantity : 1

Or one of these, for cars with ESP, depending on chassis number:

Article : Electric Module
PartNo : 12769673
Usage : 2007, 433, 92 MHZ  ESP, NLS-USE 12842078
Order Quantity : 1

Article : Electric Module
PartNo : 12777263
Usage : 2007, 433, 92 MHZ  ESP, NLS-USE 12842078
Order Quantity : 1

So, if you get a new one, you will need either 12842076 (no  ESP) or 12842078 (with ESP)

You probably need 12842078 which has a Saab list price of £285.76 + VAT = £343.  To which you add the fitting.

If you know someone experienced with a Tech2, you could buy a CIM for a bit less and fit it yourself + the Tech2 session.  But the car would not be drivable during the fitting process, so all the work needs to be done in one place.

But I would still investigate a repair by one of the companies linked to earlier.  You would (should) get it back ready to refit with no Tech2 needed.

Those CIM quotes were just to make the final bill seem cheap! But it's still £138....

At least it's fixed. :)
