Title: Smoking on start up
Post by: smudger on 23 July 2011, 07:05:24 AM
I have been having an on going problem with my 2004 1.9tdi sports for some time.

When the car is parked over night on the drive and then come to start in the morning it chucks out loads of blue smoke. If you rev the engine for a few seconds it disappears.

It only happens after the car has been stood for some time.

What could be causing this to happen?

I have had numeerous checks done by a local garage and no problems found. recently had MOT done and emmissions was good.

Run numerous diagnostics and nothing found.

Is this something to be worried about or should i just ignore?

Hi Smudger... Sorry to hear you have some bother - this sounds like something I would normally associate with valve-stem seals - when the car is left standing, residual oil is tracking past the seals and into the combustion chamber. Then, when you start the engine, that oil is burnt off giving the blue smoke you described.

I'm still very new to the SAAB and also to diesels, so someone else may come along with a totally different theory.

I certainly would NOT ignore it because it obviously isn't right.

Make sure you post back here and let us know how it gets resolved

I'd guess at slight overfuelling for some reason at start up, Got to go out now but will be back with some theories later, Unless someone beats me to it  ;)

Right, a slight over fuelling at start up often gives the appearence of a light blue tinge to the smoke but also white smoke, this can be a dripping injector? or Faulty glow plug?, there can also be a number of other things that cause this problem, as Trenchfoot says oil burning could be the problem. Are you using the correct oil for the car? is the car parked level or on a slope? is the EGR valve good? are the engine breather pipes ok?

I have cleaned out the egr valve numerous times and the smoking on start up has never gone away. also not really sure if egr valve is working properly anyway as struggle with power below 1500rpm and then once it gets to 2000rpm it kicks in like a steam train on drugs.

Is there anyway to test the egr valve once of the car or could a blanking plate confirm the egr valve is tits up?

I will solier on about the smoking on start up, see if anything else comes to light.

thanks for the replies.

Take the car to a specialist or main dealer and get it service programmed to the latest ecu software. There is a fix associated with starts from absolute cold and I've seen it make a huge difference to one car in the past and it could well be affecting your car too.

The early Fiats/Alfa 1.9jtd suffered also, check out a Fiat or Alfa forum for a bit more info as it's basically the same engine. I'd still go with it being Diesel smoke though rather than oil?

I've had this exact problem on a 54 plate (2005 model) Tid last week, I never had any fault codes appear and I had been kind of ignoring the problem.... I took it in last week and it was diagnosed as a Inlet Manifold problem.

Tiny puff of smoke (water vapor?) when I start from cold now and the engine pulls much better in the low gears, I am however nearly £700 lighter (4 hour job).

I have also had this issue before with my saab a 2 year ago (Saab 9-3 1.9 Tid 2005 8v 120bhp) and it was my number 2 injector. I did not get any fualt code but it checked by a local garage and he confirmed that it was my 2nd injector bought a one from scrapyard and and got the garage to replace the injector and it worked fine.

But now i do have another issue starting problem in the morning nothing relating to this.
