Title: anyone recommend an auto gearbox specialist? Kent or Surrey
Post by: drmick on 23 August 2011, 06:02:53 PM
I've got gearbox issues on my MY05 2L vector auto estate. Took it to my normal garage and they said it sounded like the valvebody failing but couldn't recreate the symptoms, but its got worse recently and I have it booked in for diagnosis at a gearbox specialist in Eastbourne on Thursday that was recommended by my normal garage. I am fearing the worst and a big bill but would like to get a second opinion, or quote for the work, once its been diagnosed.

I am based in North Kent and North Surrey, so does anyone have any recommendations of auto gearbox specialists in either of these regions?

Thanks
Michael

Honest John in the Telegraph sings the praises, in most fulsome terms, of King Automatics, in Epsom. I'd give them a call and tell them the symptoms before taking it to Eastbourne.

There are some pretty knowledgeable Saab-specific people on here, too. Why not tell us the symptoms?

Thanks BOF I'll look at King Automatics - got it booked into place in Eastbourne so I'll still take it there.

The original symptoms were that as you eased off the accelerator to slow down to go round a bend all would be fine, but when I reapplied the accelerator nothing would happen then suddenly huge amount of revs and off it would go. More recently if you accelerate to 40mph and the ease off it sits at ~2700rpm and won't change up, some more accelerator and revs will rise and then it will change up, does the same at higher speeds as well. There are a few other things where it just doesn't feel right when driving along at a constant speed in traffic which are hard to describe, and had a few moments where it felt like it was going to stall going up and down some hills around bristol at the weekend - really needs someone to test drive it and tell me what they think, hence taking it to a specialist. The ATF has been checked and is the right level and looks OK and it has the latest gearbox software.

I'm sure its a coincidence but I used to have a 50mile each way commute to work around the M25 and all was well with the car, in March I  moved house and now have a 6 mile commute on country roads and since about April I've noticed things not being right with the gears which have got progressively more often

Hi,
Its not easy to diagnose gearbox faults without driving the car, but we find most faults like this to be a solenoid on the valve body not functioning correctly.
Sometimes its a delay and then hard change into drive from park or neutral, or 'flared' changes - rather like a clutch slipping - in other geras.
Let the guys in Eastbourne to have a look and let me know thier thoughts.
We can remove and replace the whole valve body assembly with a recon unit, fully tested and warrentied for 3 months, if you require it.
Anyway, let me know
Kind regards
Simon
