Title: boot rails
Post by: idlerider on 11 September 2011, 07:23:58 PM
Looking at 'for sale' ads showing 9-5 estates, I've seen a few with pictures showing what look like cover strips over the load securing rails, matching (more or less) the carpet colour. Are these original? - and does anyone know if they're available anywhere?

The load fastening system changed somewhere  around 2004/5.  On my later estate the fixing toggles fit into 4 places, one in each corner.  They don't have the metal rails.

On the older cars there is a slide that the fasteners clip into.  I think, but I'm not 100% sure, that the cover strips may have been deleted for 2004/5.

My late 2004 (2005MY) Vector has the multi position rail with a grey cover strip (grey carpet).   I suspect all of these things were in a state of flux around then, probably using up old parts on the assembly line until they ran out.

I did buy the proper and very sturdy anchor hoops that fit in the tracks, but have only used them a couple of times in 6 years.  It's a very elegant solution to a problem that most people don't have.

I sometimes wonder of I should simply take the covers off, then I would be more inclined to use the anchors because I wouldn't have to think about where to put the now unattached covers.  The obvious place is under the boot floor, but by the time I get to that sort of thinking the heavy item is already in the boot  :)

Richard, my carpets are grey - and I too have the anchor hoops. Maybe, if you don't want your cover strips, I can make you an offer for them!  ;D

My copy of the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) shows these cover strips as fitted from 1999 - 2005 models and for the Canada & American market only. The part no for the grey strips is 5138797.

My copy of the EPC says that is a valid part no. for all cars from 1999-2002 and then US/CA 99-05. Also available in beige apparently.

My basic 05 Linear has the rails but the securing loops are a bit pricey.

Sorry guys. But they were standard on Linear Estates in Aus in 2001. Hers has them. Can't think of the last time we actually used them in the last 5 years though. But they look the part.

Nine-fiver:
We're talking about the cover strips over the rails - not the rails themselves. So far, I've found someone who'll sell me a new pair of Saab ones for £17 including VAT and delivery, and a breaker who wants £33.60 for the same thing but second-hand! - Crazy or what?

A great system, and the plastic strips are certainly there on the late '01 cars over the multi-fit rails.

In 2001 I went to the Melbourne International Motor Show and there was a new model SAAB 9-5 wagon hanging off the rails, vertically from the roof of the hall, bonnet off the floor, so you could walk under it.

Mightily impressed I was at the time. Bought one 8 years later.

In our local Holden wagons (GM)they have the same system in the floor, same window switches, roof pulls, door hinges, etc...you know the deal.

Do share the name of the new source- I might be tempted. I can probably hazard a guess at the breaker who is asking silly money...
