Title: DPF Bypass?
Post by: Kev_Mc on 20 September 2011, 11:04:46 AM
After my EGR valve was replaced after a check engine light, I now have another check engine light and limp home mode. Tech 2 says this is the DPF which is clogged.

My indie said this is very hard to unclog and a new DPF (catalyst? I've no idea) would be in the order of £1500 fitted. He said that there is a workaround to bypass the DPF where they drill a hole through it, and the ECU is modified to ignore / take out the DPF.

Has anyone else heard of this? The indie said they'd done it on several 1.9Tid's this month alone.

Apparently I'll get slightly increased economy and performance. Any downsides (apart from CO2 which I care not about) - is this too good to be true?

I'll do a bit more reading later but my first thought is that even if you sort all the ECU etc. might it be a problem come MOT time because it will be tested to a higher standard for particulates?

That £1500 price includes a Saab DPF?  I've heard that the part costs around £900!!

I've also heard that non-Saab ones can be found at under £400.  I don't drive diesel, so I can point to the details.

He said it was close to £1000 just for the part. It's just for the DPF thing - he mentioned the catalyst, though I didn't really know what he was going on about.

Get rid of it and code it out of the ECU, your car will still pass an MOT emissions test  ;)

That is effectively what they are doing. Car is there now - should be done over the next few days (car was in limp home mode, so I've not had a lot of choice but to have this done - well this or pay £1500 ish :D  )

Glad it will still pass the MOT - was going to ask him tonight when I dropped mine off but I forgot.

Got a 2.0LPT Auto 9-5 as a courtesy car - that thing is sloooowwww...
