Title: 2001 95 Purchase Nightmare!
Post by: madmax26 on 23 September 2011, 02:58:31 PM
Sometimes things just get worse!

After finally finding a nice 95 for my friend, we made the purchase.

We picked up the car last night, knowing that there were things that needed to be taken care of. Front seat heaters not working, and only one key.

She drove the car home, all smiles. An hour later She calls me all upset.

Just as she left the highway the car (engine) skipped a bit. Shortly after smoke started out the tail pipe. By the time she reached her home, the smoke was pouring out the tail pipe. Neighbors came out expecting to see the car on fire.

I jumped in the car and ran over to the dealer, he was still there, thank goodness. I explained what had happened. After he made several calls, a tow truck was on its was with a loaner to pick it up.

He seems to think the turbo let go. Does this seem like the problem? The long test ride we took showed no signs of any smoke! The car seemed to run fine, not as fast as my Aero, but quick.

Does this seem like the problem?

Thanks
Mark

Turbo would be my first guess.  If they change it, the intercooler should be removed and washed out to get rid of any metal particles.  Otherwise they can get into the engine.

Thanks again for the fast reply!

I'll mention the intercooler cleaning to them and see what they think. I have a feeling that they won't be too interested in doing the extra work to clean it.

If they don't clean it is it safe to say that it's going to smoke a little for a while until all the oil is gone?

There could be a lot of oil in there.  If you leave it, the car could smoke for a long time and some proportion of the airflow through (and the associated cooling) will be blocked, so you will lose performance a bit as well.

But it's more the metal bits that you want to make sure come out.  If they get through to the cylinders it could seriously damage the engine.

The turbo seals go, letting the oil in, which causes the smoking.  But they seem to fail as part of a bearing collapse.  This means that the turbine blades will probably have hit the  turbo body, and metal swarf and bits of blade could be in the system.

I would also worry that the oil would damage the catalytic convertor in the exhaust.

Thanks again
I'll check and see that these problems are taken care of.
