Hi all,
On Saturday car just cut out at 70 without any warning. EML flashing, then constant. Pulled over and switched off. When I looked under bonnet was amazed to see the rear DI (V6) giving a off a lot of light brown smoke. Unplugged cassette and waited to all cool down. Plugged back in and was able to get to a friends 2 miles away but only just as stopped in drive and wouldnt fire again. Have ordered new DI for £110 from the Bay. Just hope its not one from the recall program that never went back, cross that bridge if it happens. Have noticed the plug from the loom is a little burned around three of the pins. The real pain is that MOT was today and Tax at end of month, so have had to SORN it incase i cant fix it quickly. Have been told that the connectors are readily available as AMP make them?? so just got to wait now until it arrives and can give it a go. Both DI's changed at 72000mls with this one failing at 125100mls. Dont know what a dealers price would have been, but all the others Neos etc wanted £250 plus for 1. Had both replaced free at 72000 and the price then each on my invoice is £126.76 each.
Wondered if anyone else had noticed this on DI failures. When my 9000 went there was no obvious signs that it was at fault, NO SMOKE

Smoke and fire related DI failures are very rare, usually they cause poor running or just silently die. The only exciting one I've seen where it caught fire was a Turkish copy.

I had one smoke on a V6 Omega a few years ago, the car was still under warranty so was sorted. The dealer replaced both just in case. Are these the same type as fitted to Saab's?

The odd thing was the car was still running but smelt terrible, once replaced it went a lot better and the fuel consumption was improved. The dealer reckoned he had never seen one fail before but dont they all say that?  ;D
