Oil Cooler at change time

Hi All,
New to this site and was just reading some old posts and came across one where a saaber was saying his fresh oil goes black very soon after an oil change, (even though he had cleaned the sump) .. I used to get the same... so at last change I dropped the oil cooler off  and emptied that and rinsed it.   I was surprised how much black oil was trapped in there and the pipes.  Took an extra litre or so to fill but now 1000+ miles later oil is still fairly golden.

Not sure if this has been mentioned 100 times before or even if I've posted in the right bit.

Thanks for that.  I've heard of that being a possible problem but only once and only as a suggestion.

You've just confirmed that cleaning it works! :)

Question.
Do all 95's have oil coolers, or is it just the autos?

Thanks

All petrol 9-5's have the oil cooler, I can't really remember if diesels do or not but I don't think so. This is a reference to the engine oil cooler, the autos also have a separate transmission oil cooler. The oil cooler on the 4 cyl models holds about 750ml of oil and I believe it may have a thermostat in it too.

Hi, on my m98 9-5 it is dead easy to remove, takes 5 mins once the front undercover is off, you can see it about 20" long x 2.5" x1.5"  2 pipes going into one end secured with a 10mm nut and a 10mm bolt at each end. there is a thermostat for it built into the oil filter area that opens at 105 C, I don't think it had been off before but even after 15 years the 2 o rings were still squishy and re-useable.

Both the 4 and 6 cylinder diesels have oil coolers of sorts which are part of the oil filter housing -  they are not small radiators fitted at the bottom of the cooling system radiator as used on the petrol engines.  IIRC an accessory was offered back in my early years of motoring which was a finned cover which replaced the existing oil filter housing and offered some oil cooling effect without the effort of having to plumb in a conventional oil cooler.
