Humour me with a Loud Bang...

This is an odd one but I promised my dad I would ask ...

My father has a MY06 9-3 which he was using around a week ago. It is a 1.9 Diesel engine who no known problems.

After leaving the car standing for about an hour he says he turned the ignition to the first or second notch. He is unsure which.
At this exact moment he says the car made a loud bang, as if a firework had gone off underneath the car. He said it was accompanied with the car shaking and vibrating as if something heavy had been thrown at it.

I have suggested the obvious that in fact it WAS a firework nearby but he is absolutely convinced it has come from the car. My only thoughts would be fuel somehow igniting in the exhaust system, but on a diesel? And by what? Particularly as the engine had stood for sometime and the engine was not running when this occurred. Only the ignition was active.

Unless I am missing something obvious I will have to presume it was just a coincidence the bang occurred when the key was turned and in fact its driver confusion ;)

Thanks in advance and happy new year Saaby people!

check both front springs are still intact..if they let go it's normally at the bottom..

yes they can make a loud bang when they let go..

Those bonnet/boot struts can let go with one hell of a loud bang as well!

Coincidence is a very unnerving thing. One day long ago my lad was in the process of pushing on a Lucar connector after upgrading his headlights on the Evo and at that precise moment the compressor next to him in the garage started up. He must have leapt about a foot in the air - I wet myself laughing......

Lol. Yes. I've had similar experiences. I was once convinced I downed the power to my entire street by plugging a scart cable into my VCR. The power shut off on no less than 2 occasions when I plugged it in. Crazy coincidence. (i hope)

Thanks for the tips. I'll get him to check out the front springs.
