Just noticed the smell of petrol when I got out of the car, yesterday, and again when I came back and was ready to drive away.

Fuel gauge reporting full tank.  No obvious sign of leak.

Likely cause?

Car is 9-5 Aero Estate, M02

Split in a vent pipe?  There are a few. But the tank is vented through the EVAP system with non-return valves between the tank and the engine.  One of the pipes goes to the boost control valve. This is the black plastic thing on the front of the engine with the three rubber pipes connected to it.

Fuel coupling on top of the fuel tank?

Mine was the same and then I lost half a tank in a few miles.

The plastic that hold the fuel connector in place gets brittle and allows the couplings to pop out.

Easy to check just lift the rear seat, pop the cover off and you will see the pipes. Run the engine and if there leaking you will see the petrol.
