I have no personal experience of the diesel engine, but I hear that the regen won't start until the engine is warm and then needs about 20 mins more to complete.

My wife does that sort of low mileage and our dealer told her not to buy a diesel.

Exactly and isn't it the auto versions that need good run to do a regen but locked in lower gear to get revs up? He is more driving around the community with occasional southern bypass runs but that's only a distance of 12 miles continuous dual end to end before roundabouts so will that do it or is he likely to blocked up DPF?

all modern diesels fitted with a dpf need a good run to get the dpf hot enough to do a regen,if not it will clog up,if all he is doing is short trips a petrol model would have been a better option..
