Ignition switch not disconnecting when key removed
« on: 22 August 2024, 04:57:17 PM »
This is a recurring issue on the 9-5, well, it's the second time I have done this

No pictures, just words, apologies, but this is a good thread https://saabworld.net/showthread.php?t=26395

The problem is that there is a pin, which, when the key is removed, is positioned over a ramp and a spring, held in place by a plastic cover on the base of the key barrel.

The first job is to remove the barrell. This is done by putting the key into the "off" position and pushing something into the hole

I had some 1mm think steel, from which I cut a 3-4mm sliver and bent through 90 degrees to be able to close the detent. I had previously use allen keys, but this worked really well as I tried on an out of car spare which released first time. I would have taken a photo of this but having put it into my toolbox, it seems to have evaporated. grrr  >:(

While it was out I took the opportunity to fettle the sliding pind for the lock so that there was no resistance to turning. I also added some grease & oil. This isn't the failure mode though

What appears to happen is that the pin in the centre shaft becomes worn / damaged, which means the spring force is insufficient to pop the lock up when the key is removed. After removing & emery cloth deburring the pin, I simply added a layer of chemical metal onto the ramp, which shortens the protusion and deflection of the pin from the correct position. Only a mm or so.

After allowing it to harden & working it  by removing / replacing the key, together with a small hammer to encourage the barrell to eject & all was fine.

Refit into the car & all was fine. The best way of checking is to have the radio on and remove the key. If it remains on, then the barrell hasn't withdrawn enough, radio off, all good & your battery will not drain

Glacier Blue also had a tyre fitted to the OSR as it was going down after a few hours. I might try to find a way to test my Trionic 7 map on this car in the next couple of weeks....

Guess what, I was doing some tidying up today and went to the parts shelf where the spare centre console is stored, and I found the special tool.

This was fashioned from some bodywork repair sheet steel, bent by hand, with some electrical shrink tube for the handle. This works pretty much first time every time.

The electrical plug is there for scale.
