My 2001 9-5 SE 2.3 LPT is smoking :(  It happens at start-up from cold and lasts for about 30-45 seconds before it clears.  Smoke colour is blue-ish and does smell quite oily.  Rather than describe further, I've filmed a typical 'smoking event' so you can see for yourself...http://youtu.be/w6I7Vue7BFY

I'm trying to narrow down the most likely causes so I can start getting them looked at, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated - thanks!

Few things come to mind, what version of PCV system do you have?

Is the white valve that sits just behind the cam cover OK? it should only allow air to pass one way.

Is the outlet from the inter cooler oily?

Could be the turbo, just done mine recently and its fixed exactly the same problem.

My old 9-5 was smoking like that - mine turned out to be the turbo. Hopefully yours is something cheaper.

Welcome to STT by the way :)

Hi

Leaking oil seals on turbo allow oil to seep thru overnight. If it's really bad you could knacker the cat. Ensure PCV is latest version first though in case. Worth a sump drop and clean out too.

Edit: just watched your vid. quite a bit of smoke - I'd get it sorted. Mine did that at 47k miles!

Thanks to everyone's advice.  I don't know what version of PCV I have, I don't recall it being replaced in the last 10 yrs, so I'll get that replaced first and see if that sorted out the smoke. Thanks again!

Just wanted to add an update...I found that if I make a reasonably long journey, i.e. motorway trip etc., then the next time the car is started, the smoking is particularly bad?  Does this have any significance to the diagnosis?

That is how mine behaved and it was the Turbo.

Short journeys and it hardly smoked, anything more than 20 miles and it was a lot worse the next time.

Not sure why as they are up to temp within a couple of miles but maybe the oil thins down more after a longer journey?
