Well, I seemed to have opened a hornets nest with my post.  Thanks to everyone for their generous offerings and what does seem to be generally sound advice.

On the emissions topic, it does seem to be bizarre that imposed regulations seem to make fuel economy worse rather than better!  Many years ago, I changed my 2.8 diesel Isuzu Trooper 5-door for the newer 3.1 diesel 3-door, the latter having all of the latest at that time of the emission control gizmos.  The 'old' car did between 40 and 50 to the gallon, the new one struggled to maintain 30 plus mpg and was as low as 27 mpg around town.  I never really worked out what contribution I was making to reducing my carbon footprint with the new car!

Anyhow, to matters more current.  I suppose I will have to give the machine a good blast from time to time as that seems to be the only solution, albeit not an especially environmentally friendly one, not to mention the fuel wasted to achieve that.  However, I am a long way off 60k miles and it will probably take another 4 years for me to get up there and may be the car will have moved on to others by then.

Thanks for confirming the engine maker.  That's quite interesting as it confirms the tale I was told.  What is interesting too is that a long time ago when I test drove a BMW diesel (the first they introduced I believe) I made a point of asking the dealer where the engine had originated and he told me it was a modified Fiat marine diesel engine.  As they say, what's round will go around!

Regarding the Hirsch upgrade fitted by Concept SAAB, the sales guy did say they only fitted then to the diesel estates (and may be only the auto versions too?) because they found the standard 1.9 TiD to be a bit numb in the bigger vehicle.

If you think you have the Hirsch upgrade, have a look here:

Plenty of info in the Vauhall owners club forums. EGR is a doddle to do - did mine last year, only a bit of soot in there and the solenoid part of its gubbins was completely clear and working smoothly & correctly. However, 80-90% of my motoring is m/way to and from work and the rest involves a level of boy-like hooning.
