A couple of issues

Well we've had our 02 Aero for a year now. So far it's had the PCV fix, sump clean & a new turbo  ::)

A couple of niggles I'd like some advice on:
There is a high-pitched extra note when you use the accelerator (in gear or not). Always difficult to describe these things, but the intensity seems to vary directly with the engine revs - any ideas? I had hoped it would disappear when we had the new turbo fitted, but it's still exactly the same.

Also the heating unit doesn't seem to work properly at all. The air conditioning really isn't very cold (feels like outside ambient) and the heater doesn't seem very hot or effective either, which makes me feel there's some fundamental problem with it?

Any thoughts much appreciated - thanks

Have you done the recalibration test?  Engine on and running and up to temperature.  Press AUTO and OFF buttons together and wait for the system to do its stuff - about 30 seconds.

At the end you will see a set of numbers in the ACC display.  The best answer is "0".

http://blog.saab9-5.com/?p=26  gives a full description.  But it only checks electrics etc.  Not the level of the refrigerant gas/liquid. or the compressor clutch gap - which can be shimmed if necessary.

Thanks - yes I'd tried that & yes it came up with "0"....

Any thoughts about the high-pitched whine??

Cheers

Could the whine be anything to do with serpentine belt/idler pulleys?
If the pulley bearing is knackered it could well make all sorts of odd noises...

Thanks Russ - that does seem to be general area the sound's coming from.

We changed the serp belt on our old 9000 a couple of times & had to make a special tool (bit of metal with a couple of holes in it)  :)

Is this a simple DIY job? Anything I should know (we don't have a Haynes for the 95)

cheers

By the way, as I'm in the mood to fix things, I forgot to mention that since we got the turbo replaced it's been throwing a check engine light (had been belching oily smoke for a couple of weeks before we got it fixed). The garage pulled the code & it showed an O2 sensor. Any thoughts on which one it would be and where to source the sensor?

But the aircon compressor will whine if the system has no gas!  Try turning the ACC off and on and see if the noise changes.

.... got all excited about that thought, but no luck - no difference, so the odds are it's a pulley?
Just about to enter the 100K club, so not unreasonable?

I thought the system disabled the compressor if the gas pressure dropped too low?
Nobody likes a smartarse - until they need one.

It should, but my aircon squealed for a while and it stopped when the gas was refiled and a leak fixed.  Maybe it was getting low but not low enough to close down?

I've seen them with less than 250g of gas in (should have 870g) and the aircon still "worked".

Well thanks for all your thoughts on this so far.

So, replacing pulleys... wing off? Removing serp belt, any tricks?

Also lack of hot air - could be related to leaky air con?

phoenix

Lack of hot air suggetss either there's no coolant flow through the matrix or the mix flap isn't operating properly. The easy way to check the first is to pop off the carpet cover in teh passenger footwell with the engine warmed up. The two aluminum pipes should be (very) hot.

If not it might be the heater bypass valve. Info on what to do here:

to remove the belt you need a 3/4" extension bar and put it into the slot on the top of the tensioner behind the engine, you can then lever the tensioner so slacken the belt and remove it, you don't need to take anything off the car. You can run it briefly like this to see if it stops the noise. You want to spin all the pulleys to see if they are rough/noisy. Of course it could be the alternator or something else...

Thank you all for your help. Sounds like I've got a few things to check out for the heating, and the new belt / tensioner & pulleys sounds fairly straightforward.

Thanks
