Hi,
Just got to say forums been a big help and I haven't been joined long, anyway this is on behalf of a friend who's at his wits end.  He has a 2.2 53 plate saab 9-3 linear, issues are as follows

1) Car smokes on acceleration, dark black sooty smoke, eml comes on, egr valve cleaned and then replaced eml goes off after egr remove but comes back on after 2 or so miles.  Fault reader says egr valve??????

2) radio/sid cd just died for some unknown reason wont come back on, cd player doesn't eject and there is no display.  Could this be a fuse or would it be a new radio controller??

Any suggestions on either or both issues would be a massive help!!!

with regards to the smoke the next step maybe clean or replace the mass air flow sensor would this sound right or are we wasting our time???

Not sure about the audio. It might be a fuse. or it may be one of the optic fibre cables has fallen out, or it may have died.....

The usual cause of a lot of black smoke on the diesel is a split in the inlet pipework or the intercooler itself.  Sometimes just a pipe has come off.  But a split intercooler is fairly common...

I'd also check the intercooler and hoses for leaks, but it could also be the egr (cleaning doesn't always work) as for the radio if the radio/sid/cd have all gone off I'd be looking for a blown fuse and dont forget the fuses in the boot behind the n/s trim  :)

Hi sorry intercooler pipe checked no signs of any splits, looks in good condition, egr has been cleaned & replaced with no change at all.  is this pointing to the air flow sensor?? Code is suggesting egr,  arrrrrrgh

Any help with wot number fuse Im looking at??

Cheers the the help folks

When you say the intercooler pipe has been looked at, do you mean it has been pressure tested or just eyeballed? They can get very very tiny holes in them that you can hardly see even with them removed from the car, you really need to pressure test it to be certain.

aerojon

check the map sensor in the inlet manifold,on a diesel these can get gunged up quite badly and cause all sorts of problems..

prestonsaab

turbo and actuator common fault on saab

jimbo

remove the manifold and clean out the carbon make sure that the flaps are moving in the manifold
clean with card cleaner.look inside  to make sure that is clean
