Slick 50?

Paper Plane

Anyone here use it? Is it worthwhile?

A friend of mine swears by it and was wondering about it for my 9-5 Aero Hot.

Been going for donkey's years. IMHO it falls into the same category as Wynn's, Redex, etc. Redex served a purpose 40 years ago when I was running cars firing on three cylinders, but I don't think these days this sort of additive is needed. Modern fuels and oils cover all the bases. Or they should do, given the cost.

But you'll get better answers from the more technically-minded members in a while.

That. There's no need for it, in fact tests have been done that show it causes problems. If the car needed snake oil it would have been specified on the service sheet from the factory.

I have to confess I used it many years ago in my 99T - before synthetics. Not sure if it helped but the engine was in very good condition and not requiring any remedial work last time it was overhauled by JamSAAB. Saying that I have to agree these modern oils are so much better. Very regular oil changes are the answer IMHO, especially on high performance cars.

Footnote: I do add a few squirts of 2 stroke to the fuel once in a while, which seems to do no harm but does seem to make the car a little more responsive and quieter.  ::)

Slick was marketed as a friction reducer.  This sounds fine in theory until you realise that in a gearbox the synchromesh cones require friction to work as designed.   Back in the day, people who tried Slick in synchro boxes found that it meant asking more leisurely changes, so the gear parts had more time to match their speeds.

I used Slick50 years ago on my old Cortina. I'm guessing this was 1988! It made a massive difference to that car, though it probably hadn't seen new oil for many years. Rubbish car but I loved it!

Far cheaper to use Shell V-Power.

Far, far cheaper to add a couple of squirts of 2 stroke :)
