I take it your local is Oxford SAAB? Have you by chance ever used Banbury? Only they are slightly nearer to me than Oxford

Oxford Saab, where I bought the car, are very good having sorted out a few probs within warranty. But they are a bit dear labour-wise, and I can get the code erased by my local garage if not FOC, very inexpensively. (boss was one of my mechanics years ago)  8)

It's unlikely to run right for a long time, if doing that cured it then it's a pretty good sign that you need the wiring harness on injector number 3.

Ta - I am sure I will be doing the plugs, most likely all of them, starting with No.3.... ;)

Latest. Started the car at LHR - no EML. Drove perfectly all the way home. Will get a plug kit during the week and fit it anyway. Strange that the light still stayed on this morning after arriving at work and trying the battery trick, but only came on as normal tonight then went off after starting as usual.
Will keep info coming.

ETA: In this morning, ran like a (good) dream, no EML. Before I left for work, OH asked what I will be doing on my days off (four, starting tomorrow) I said "Well, for a start, a new plug/wiring for No. 3 injector!"

Result. Got the kit from my Saab dealer this morning, not too bad, £15.60 inc VAT. Fitted in about 45 mins. Clips on the wiring trunking a right b1tch as, with someone else, most of them broke as they were so brittle. So it is secured with 3 neat cable ties. Also gave all the terminals on the injectors a clean-up as best as I could, and lightly coated all the connectors with Durite anti-corrosion grease - this is excellent stuff for electrical terminals and I always use it on wiring blocks etc.
Gave the car a good test; in all gears from just over 1000 rpm pulled away smo0thly right up past 3000 rpm. Also ran it again with very gently steady throttle from about 1200 rpm in stages up to over 2000 rpm, concentrating on around 1500 rpm which is the engine speed I first had the problem at two months ago - not a hint of a misfire or hesitation. In addition I swear the acceleration is even better, but maybe I am telling myself that. My OH and lad will both say what they think later.
Looking at the contacts, they have definitely not got a good grip - I broke away the end of the plug (not difficult as it was so brittle) and pushed the connectors out. They have just about no grip compared with the redesigned ones; I cut a thin piece of card the same thickness as the spades in the injectors and the connectors would not grip them. So even though I had no flickering EML and only had it the one journey after running the car on idle with No. 3 disconnected, I am sure that I have nailed the problem.
Hope the foregoing is of use to others.

Sorry about the poor pic quality, but one can see what I mean by lack of grip.

I do hope that's fixed it! :)

Intermittent faults are aways the most difficult.

Well, it seems to be OK now; one return trip from Oxford to Bovingdon - one trip to LHR & back and back to LHR this morning - the car is running like a [good] dream. I am delighted with the result and would recommend the replacement of at least the No. 3 connector if the plugs are the earlier version (ie with the yellow locking tag).
