Thanks Tom, I suspect the change was save costs. The heavy hands of GM accountants ... but they ended up something worse than the original (rather like Microsoft)

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Tailgate Washer
« on: 07 November 2020, 05:08:08 PM »
Hi All,

I've just acquired a replacement 9-5 estate with a modest mileage but with a few minor niggles that need sorting. One of which is the tailgate washer. On older 9-5's this was an elegant solution which squirted up from the wiper hub: on this later model it's a single jet mounted up at the top of the tailgate which just squirts straight down missing the window. Not sure how to fix this. Replacement parts are like hen's teeth as suppliers just offer the old system, and not sure how much of the tailgate trim I have to fight to get at it.

I alos need to replace the auto gearshift jalousie and I'm summining up the courage. Last time I did one, I lost the circlip dwon into the bowels ...

Happy days!

Oh no, I've broken my magic cupholder! I assume to replace it unscrews from the back, just have to take SID and the radio out to access?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually the first change ...

Last week we had a run around Holland and Belgium in the Aero Auto. The traffic in Belgium was quite vile, culminating in getting stuck trying to get round Ghent for a couple of hours. The auto box was starting to get a bit twitchy and jerky and telepathy suggets it was getting seriously hot. I'm putting her in for a fluid change (150,000 miles) which might do some good. It's fine on an ordinary run and fine using the paddles. Anybody any views? Apart from "don't go to Belgium" of course.

Sorted. Crankcase breather hose had come unhitched.

Well, new plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor. Still running a bit lumpily, but I only get the CEL coming on randomly. Sometimes it'll go for days without problems ....

I think I'll start by cleaning the MAF sensor as that takes five minutes and costs nothing.

Tried that and I have P0171. Anybody any ideas?

That's a thought. I may start up and as soon as CEL comes up, shut down and see if the code is stored.

Just coming back to this one again. Aero had a CEL issue this weekend but I had to drive back from York. I didn't have my code reader with me but the car seemed to be fairly OK, just a little bit ragged and drove back South 200 miles with no obvious problems. Hooked up this morning but code reader couldn't find a code number so I cancelled the erro and CEL went out.

But it's come on again, and still can't read a code. I think I'll have to toddle off to find TECH-II chap to get to the bottom of it. I suspect that it's a misfire. She's coming up for a service, so she'll get a new set of plugs anyway. Watch this space for further developments.

Right, that's done the batteries and the capacitors. Now need to pop out for some gloop to gloop it all back together.

It's a fairly easy job, but a Dremel and a solder sucker are essential tools of the trade

Well, I'm in without damaging the circuit board or anything but it's a bit messy. Once I have the new batteries and capacitors there will be a further progress report .... what fun! I will need a large tube of gloop and a couple of cable ties ...

Well, got me siren off, and it's sitting on the desk looking at me. It is the later model, so I'm going to have to attack it with my Dremel. I can see the glue line. Is it best to try and cut down into the glue line or just cut straight in to the cover? It's going to be a bit of a mess whichever way i do it ...

Thanks chaps. The 2001 9-5 is in for an MOT tomorrow so I'll get them to take off the alarm while it's up in the air. Then it's out with the soldering iron.
