definitely going to be trading it in now so won't be getting it fixed - car is probably worth about £1500 at most probably closer to £1000, as long as it lasts a couple more weekends of driving it should be OK, then it will be someone elses problem.

After 11 years of Saab ownership it looks like this is the end - test driving an Audi A6 Avant tomorrow afternoon and possibly a BMW on Saturday - I was hoping to break the 100K barrier but looks like going to fall a couple of thousand miles short.

Hi

I have a noisy front left wheel bearing on my MY2005 9-5 2L estate - noticed it last weekend and makes noise turning left mainly but after a while it seems to quieten down and isn't noticeable.

I have booked the car in for next Friday for the bearing to be replaced, however I am going to be changing the car in the next 4 weeks - so my questions is will it be OK to just leave the bearing and trade it in in the next month, or will it become unsafe?

The only journeys I will be doing in the next few weeks will be about 20 miles on A21 and M25 once a week, so car won't be heavily used.

Thanks

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Re: rear door leak

just a quick update - dried out back of car and left the internal cover off the upper brake light. Not being particularly gifted in the DIY department I smeared a layer of vaseline around the whole upper brake light covering the seal, and so far no leaking and puddles on the boot floor. With the rain last night I would have expected a good cupfull of water in there so I think the seal around the light is the culprit.

Think I'll leave the vaseline in place for a while until the weather improves and then attempt something a bit more permanent.

Thanks

that sounds very much like the issue - the water would get in through the light cover and then track through and run along the panel covering it on the inside and drip off the ends which results in the two puddles I see on the shelf either side. Just went and had a look but the cover does seem to be very tight to the door. I'll wait until I have a willing assistant and take the inner panel off and get some one to pour water on the outside of the light and see if it comes through.

Thanks for the link, will report back when have had a chance to test theory.

Thanks

just had a quick look - the headliner is completely dry, and although the seal for the sharkfin is a bit green I don't think it is the source of the leak.

Fairly sure it is coming from the brake light somehow - the patches of water on the parcel shelf are directly under the panel over the brake light, and just removed the panel and its a bit damp under there but not excessively. There is also condensation on the glass for the brake light. If it was the sharkfin I don't see any way that the water could track from there to this point to leak.

The car needs a good clean and I've just wiped a load of gunk out of the seal for the rear door and the surrounding bodywork, the seal looks to be OK. Wondering whether the seal on the brake light is the source and its coming through there and then being deposited out the edge of the panel onto the shelf?

Think I might have to get in the boot and get some one to spray water on the brake light and see if anything comes through, and if so where.

Thanks

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / rear door leak

Hi All

I've got water leaking in through the rear door on my 9-5 estate (MY2005) - noticed it a while ago but only just getting round to sorting it out - first dry day in a while. First noticed it as a wet patch on the parcel shelf, no obvious wet marks on the head liner - there is a panel on the back of the high level brake light and it seemed to be seeping out of there when I pushed.

Any suggestions as to how it is getting there - or why its leaking? Are there any drains on the door seal that might have got blocked causing water to back up and leak out? Also the panel that allows access to the high level brake light (is that the correct term??) is there a simple way to remove it - there are no screws that are obvious so I'm assuming it clips in place, was going to remove it but don't want to break it and then not be able to put it back.

Thanks

mine did something similar during the winter - eventually the passage side mirror fell off the mounting while going round M25. Mine is a 2005 estate so about the same age, don't know if it effected both sides as the drivers side was replaced couple of years ago after being removed by a transit on a country lane.

I ordered a replacement online for £25 and there is the fitting instructions at the top of the messages on this forum - one of the few bits of car maintenance I could manage myself

All done - nice and simple, hardest bit was disconnecting the power cables for the heating element

Thanks again for posting the link to the instructions

Cheers trenchfoot - that all looks very simple, just need to find a screwdriver to ease off the clip then I can go and put the new one on

Was driving round M25 and the glass fell off my door mirror, not quite sure how but looks like the glue has just degraded as the mount was still intact with the heating element. So I've ordered a replcement just wondering is there a special way to remove the previous mount from the motor in the housing?

I had the other side broken by a lorry a few years ago and noted how fragile the motor was so I don't want to break it when I remove the old one.

Thanks for any tips

I ordered one from Amazon (not directly from amazon but one of the people who sells via amazon) for £1.08 + 10p delivery - I suspect could have found cheaper but trust Amazon even if not directly from them.

Very good service as well as ordered yesterday evening and had an email this morning saying it had been despatched using Royal Mail - so given past experience with Royal Mail I might see it some time in January

Cheers Tom - all looks very simple, I assumed it must be. Think I'll wait until next weekend when I will have my spare key near by in case I balls it up, need to order a battery as well which will also dictate when I can do it.

Thanks

Hi All

got the message on the SID saying that the battery needed replacing in my remote locking key (all in one key with controls, not the one with the separate  big slug for opening the doors) - looked in the handbook and it says to take it to garage to get it done. Is this not something I could do myself, and if so how is it done and what battery willl I need.

Secondly any ideas how long after getting the first message I have before the key will stop working?

Thanks

was hoping to jack up car and play with wheels but didn't get a chance today. Will try and see if any movement during week as should be able to jack up the car at work probably on tuesday morning. Fairly sure rear tyres are fine as they were new about 3000 miles ago. Front tyres are much older but still have lots of tread on them. Most noise seems to be road surface related as on some bits of road car is nice and quiet.

I need to get new rear brakes at some point soon so will get the garage to have a look at wheel bearings as well and give their advice, first up though is gearbox valve body which is at the end of this month.

Noticed that the three most recents threads yesterday were all started by me, suggests my little car is falling apart (although two of the threads are related)

Hi All

gave someone a lift the other day and he said "sounds like you've got a wheel bearing rubbing" as he could hear a sound. I have noticed lots more 'road noise' than normal but tyres are fine so this could be the noise - but my car makes so many non-descript noises its hard to tell whats new or different. So are there any other symptoms I should look for when driving? And then the obvious question how much will I get charged to have it replaced? Car is a MY05 Vector auto estate, and is starting to cost me an arm and a leg (lucky its automatic so can get by with only one arm and one leg....)

Thanks

Michael
