Off-topic chat, Help, Advice, General motoring issues / Coolant Venting Problem

Hello everybody.
My father's Saab 9-5 (2000) has a strange problem and I was wondering if anyone could help ?
It intermittently vents coolant (a lot of it) from under the bonnet, but we can't be sure where it comes from.
Our best guess is that it's coming from what looks like a control valve, under the top of the bonnet area in the region where the heater matrix connects to the cooling system.
The Haynes manual is next to useless and doesn't even show the valve in question.
The problem occurrs infrequently, but when it does a lot of coolant is lost very quickly.
The engine is a turbo petrol 2 litre.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy
