Delivery of large items - cars, wheels etc
« on: 02 February 2012, 08:58:31 AM »
Having driven from Norwich to Barnard Castle and back on Saturday with my sons car on a trailer behind my 9-5 estate (no one faulty as other guy had a family member rushed into hospital whilst we were nearly there and then sadly passed away) we are now trying to organise to get the car delivered again - The car has no MOT and is SORN. I don't have the time to do it again so we searched the internet and found this business

http://www.anyvan.com/

Basically you register FOC and provide them with details of the item you want delivered (in our case the car). You give them as much or as little information as necessary. We gave them a description and photo of the car (in particular noting the low front lip). They then put it out to the various courier/delivery companies registered with them and you wait for bids to come in. Within minutes some come through but they tell you to be patient and wait to see what happens.

You do not have to accept any of them or use any at all and it costs nothing.

The first quote came through about 45 mins after registration and was £240 which I thought was quite good considering the trailer cost me £82 and we used about £75 diesel. Slowly during the evening more and more e-mails came through and so far the lowest bid is £130 and they say they do not use trailers so car goes on back of a flat bed lorry. They all have to be insured etc and are rated like on eBay.

We've now given the chap up north the information to arrange it.

They seem to deal with anything and I noted someone had a set of wheel delivered some considerable distance for £30.

Thought it may be of use to someone.

Have used shipley myself in the past, sounds like a similar setup.
Also recently used paisley frieght to arrange for a set of alloys to be collected and delivered, all for £27.99.

Many thanks for that link Jim.

This was a service I could have used a few months back. I now don't need to move anything, but have added it to my bookmarks.

I used Shiply to get my 9-3 from the West Midlands to Hull after the Turbo went. Cost £130, which I thought was remarkably cheap.

Surprised how many bids I got considering its an unusual cross-country journey. Did take a couple of days as the transporter made drops around Liverpool and Manchester though.

Third the price of AA equivalent if you're not in a rush and an excellent service.

Not sure quite where your too/from was but generally you can expect to pay £1/mile for long distance recovery (over 100 miles) for local work you can expect something like £35+£1 mile.

I just used Shiply to have a bike brought from Truro to High Wycombe. 298 miles for £140, plus the £23.99 Shiply fee. Much less than just engaging a haulier without shopping around, so not a bad result. HOWEVER...

The chap that brought it had to pay them the same, and he told me of another website, UKfetch& collect (or something similar) which does not charge fees. I'll try them next time.

Funnily enough I had completely forgotten about this post back in 2012 and bizarrely I used the same company (after Googling collection services) just before Christmas to fetch my X Trail which they brought on a trailer some 196 miles and did it for £178!

No one else then came close and the service was second to none. I was given a two hour window each end for collection and delivery. The business you show didn't come up in my searches.

I reckon that it's 99.9% certainty that they are just spammers and it's their own business they are trying to promote and they think by generating inward links on different forums it will help their google search rankings. I'll put a post in the mods forum to discuss if we should remove their posts and ban them as they didn't post anything on the site that is even vaguely on topic.

Just looked at that website. To misquote Doctor McCoy in Startrek - it's English, Jim, but not as we know it.
