Replacing the crankcase NRV on 2004 Aero
« on: 21 May 2012, 02:06:20 PM »
Whilst replacing the sooty vac pipes with shiny silicone, I've also found that the NRV which goes between the throttle body and somewhere down the back of the engine has snapped, the same as kevpuk posted here: http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=538. This probably explains the stalls my wife has experienced, and the lack of go part way through acceleration.

First of all, can anyone confirm part number 5955927 is right for this assembly on a 2004 9-5 Aero? I've got the numbers 9549528 off the rubber hose to the throttle body and 160703 off the broken white NRV.

Secondly, I would like to repeat kevpuk's request: how easy is it to access the other end? I struggle to get my hands into many places in the engine bay, and if it needs access from underneath I'll admit defeat right now and get my friend to do it on the ramp.

Thank you.

There are two bits (valve and pipe) that are only sold as a unit:

Article : Hose
PartNo : 5955927
Supplementary Description : Assy
Order Quantity : 1.

Mine failed too.  The bottom end has a squeezy quick release coupling.  I paid the dealer for 20 mins to take it round the back, onto the ramp, and back again while I had a cup of coffee.

I'm glad I did.  There is a similar connector on a pipe on my wife's 9-3 Vector right at the top of the engine and in plain view.  It was stuck and I had to break it to get it off.  OK, on the 9-5 breather you get a new connector with the pipe, but if the "easy" one on the 9-3 was bad.......

Thank you for your help. I've contacted the (former) dealer and they've sent me a diagram, but wouldn't give me the part number. Even the nearest specialist is an 80 mile round trip, so I guess it's going to be my friend fitting it!

www.euro-saab-parts-direct.com  should be able to supply the part.  It's about £25.

Mine is in having that part replaced today.

Only needed the valve and the hard hose, the flexible hose from the throttle body can be reused.

The part cost £30.00 Inc vat from main dealer.

The broken valve really caused issues with performance, but didn't throw a warning light.

Thank you again. I've already found one on http://www.carpartsconnexion.com/ which I got for £29.38 including postage, so slightly more.

I looked at Euro Saab Parts, but they've never fixed the image links. Every part I look for comes up with a picture of springs. It doesn't fill me with confidence!

Mr Linear, mine hasn't thrown a code either but on a couple of overtakes I seemed to lose the thrust I am used to.

Don't bother with the Euro Saab Parts website, it's not really kept up to date, Peter is really good though. They are a more phone orientated company, I'd certainly trust him to get me a part as required or come up with options. They keep a lot of stock especially for older cars too. Always worth a call for parts.

ScarbSabb,

Mine had the same symptoms, very sluggish acceleration and running rich.

I did manage to superglue the valve as a temporary measure, but best to replace.

A follow up on this. First of all I superglued the broken valve as suggested by Mr Linear. It appears to have stuck firm, although I have not driven the car since. As the replacement arrived at lunchtime, it is now off the car.

Second, it is a real swine to unclip and remove. My hands are quite big and I couldn't get my thumb pressed down on the top button of the clip. However, it is possible to see it through the gaps in the casting behind the engine. (This is key to the solution.) Once you have the new one you will easily see it reaches the middle branch of the casting. (Be aware that there is another of these clips on the pipework under the left branch as you look at the engine. Make sure your effort is on the correct one.) For best results you need a long handled screwdriver and an assistant to press on the top clip whilst you press in the bottom and pull it off. Then unthread past everything else, thread in the new one and push it on. Push the rubber hose onto the valve, tie tag and you are done. Now go and put Savlon on your skinned knuckles.

So a DIY job? Yes, but be prepared for some cursing and skin loss.
