Dashboard speaker issue
« on: 06 May 2013, 06:07:17 PM »
Hi everybody, first time poster here. New to the forum and this is my first saab. Running around in a 51 plate 9-3 Aero.

I love it and will love it even more once I sort all the niggles left behind by the previous owner such as all the seat belt buckle stopper button things missing. How you lose/break all of them ill never know.

Anyways, onto the problem at hand...

My right front dash speaker only works when it feels like. Ill get in it in the morning and start up the car and it won't work. Ill drive for a never-the-same period of time and all of a sudden it'll start working. Sometimes I get to the end of my street and it comes on. Sometimes it takes till half way to work (15 mins,) and sometimes it takes the whole way.

There's no pattern to it as far as I can tell but it's really annoying only having sound from the left front.

I've tried pulling the volume knob out and turning it and it is definitely in the centre as it should be.

I've had both the head unit and the speaker itself out to check for faulty connections and I can't find anything wrong with either. Once it was working I had  the radio on and fiddled with the wires at both points and it didn't flicker or anything.

Has anyone had a similar issue or know what it could possible be? Maybe the speaker itself is faulty? Just seems odd that once it comes on its fine and won't go off again.

Just one last point. I've tried doing time tests to see how long, once it's working, it takes to stop working again but I can't work it out. Sometimes it will be working when I get to work but 8 hours later when I finish its back to not working again.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Dan.

Can't help too much on the speaker, I'm afraid. If it were dodgy wiring to the speaker I would expect you to hear crackling, so it might be a dry joint on the board in the radio. But that's as far as my knowledge of electronics goes.

I too had the missing buckle stops. You can buy just the buttons, but although melting the rivet end worked for a while, it wasn't as neat and they came off again. Bought some with a crimping tool on eBay a few years ago, came to about £20. Been fine ever since, so it was an expensive fix for me, but I expect I'll use it again on someone else's car.

It's the speaker. Years of abuse and I had the same issue.
Normally turn up loud and it comes to life.

Welcome to STT :)

If you swap the speakers over L-R and the problem moves, it's the speaker. If it stays, it's the amp.
