Saab 93 2.2 TID (1999) loss of power
« on: 24 September 2013, 08:09:20 PM »
Hello everyone,

My Saab 93 has recently developed loss in power, engine runs fine, no eml, exhaust gases are clean, vacuum hoses checked good, operation of waste gate actuator appears ok(closed on tick over/no acceleration and opens when revs increase approx 2k), MAP has been cleaned due to a build up of sutt. Boost pipes checked for leaks and tested under load(both swell slightly with turbo boost). All this done to no avail! I have been told it may be the EGR? If this is a possible cause would you be so kind to tell me where it is situated on this year/model thanks.
I know this may sound risky but I was considering piping a permanent vacuum supply to the waste gate actuator as a temporary measure to eliminate this being a possible cause!
Any thoughts or help will be great thank you.

I know very little about the diesel engine in this car, but I have found this picture of the EGR.

Hello Sgould do you know from your attachment what this device does (see updated attachment) I have linked the vacuum pipes from the solenoid on the near side inner wing and I now have power back?
If anyone else can help I would be very grateful.

I found out that the unknown device circled on my previous post is the swirl valve actuator.

Update my Saab is now running as it should  :) I swapped the solenoid valve controlling the swirl flaps with the overpressure waste gate valve and all good...yippee. I assume there is a vacuum leak on the swirl flap solenoid however it still functioned as it should. When the swirl flaps opened, vacuum to all other solenoids was not present hence the waste gate failing safe and opening thus no power!
