Decided that I really ought to replace the exhaust while I can do it at leisure, rather than as an emergency purchase. I have been investigating source and options, and most but not all sources seem to indicate that the 2004MY system is different to the earlier one. Does anyone have any ideas what that difference might be? The Maptun one I mentioned in my original post is for 2004MY onwards, they list a separate system up to 2003MY.

From what I can see on my copy of the EPC the front silencer (part no. 5322714) is the same for 2000 - 2006 cars  (my EPC only goes up to 2006) and from chassis no. Y3063715 -

The rear silencer part numbers are as follows:

5321625 - Black tail pipe sleeve

5321658 - Polished tail pipe sleeve - for 2000 to 2003 B235R engine

30589654 ( old number was 5193297) for 2002 to 2006 B205E & B235E engines

Hope that helps!

I think that the only change may be to accommodate the tailpipe from the back box.

Assuming that the downpipe and catalytic convertor is remaining.

Flexy between downpipe and rest of exhaust is the same for all. Saab listed a different part for 1998-2000 but it's no longer supplied and replaced by the later pipe. B205 engins lists the same part number as the B235.

Article : Intermediate pipe
PartNo : 4966990
Usage : 2000-2010, B235
Order Quantity : 1

Same applies to the central silencer and pipe.  Later pipe replaces the previous for all engines:

Article : Silencer
PartNo : 5322714
Usage : 2000-2010
Ch. Y3062715--
Order Quantity : 1

On the other hand there are 18 different rear boxes and tail pipes listed.  Of which 3 are for the Aero.  The first one in 2000 is replaced by a later one for 2000-2003.  Then for 2004-2010 there is a different one.

Article : Silencer
PartNo : 5464573
Usage : 2004-2010, B235R
Tail pipe sleeve: polished
Order Quantity : 1

I think that it can only be the different back bumper on the Aero.  The 2.3t exhaust does not change in 2004.

A couple of photos.

One is of the Hirsch exhaust on the 2002 car.  It comes through the cut out in the original bumper.

The second is the original Saab exhaust on my Aero estate.  This is the photo from Mark Arnold's sale advert.  Exhaust has changed to a twin outlet with the Hirsch upgrade since that photo was taken.

Blimey, talk about making things difficult!! Thanks for all the info, at least I will know whether I'm being offered the right parts. I have an outstanding request on Partsgateway, something may come of that.

This might help.  Its from a 1999 2.3t 9.5.  At least it gives you something to compare.

I only have a picture of bits of the 2007 exhaust that came off.
