Thermostat Question.....
« on: 07 July 2014, 10:31:44 PM »
Hi,

I replaced my thermostat earlier in the year as my 1.9tid wasn't getting up to temperature. It would only get to quarter heat on general useage and if I was giving it some beans the engine would get up to temperature and then cool off again.

Due to this I changed the thermostat, however, whilst changing it did cure the problem but this seemed to have only worked temporarily, maybe a month or so.

Since fitting the new thermostat (a circoli one from eurocarparts) the car now gets up to temperature but then the temperature fluctuates. So when sitting in traffic or pootling round town it stays fairly constant. However, if cruising on the motorway the temperature gauge then cools off to just above quarter but it will move up and down (never over heats though).

Any ideas? Did I just buy a dodgy/inferior thermostat?

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Nick

That does sound like a bad thermostat again.  Classic symptoms of a failed thermostat.

Once you get up to speed and maintain it with a light throttle, the radiator will overcool the engine, so the thermostat shout shut a bit to keep the temperature up.  It probably isn't shutting.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I've spoken to ECP and they said I could get a refund as it did come with a 12month warranty, though it will have to be tested to qualify (I may record the temp gauge as proof if they say otherwise).

I thought it must be staying open again as its similar symptoms to the original thermostat I replaced but that just stayed at quarter heat rather than fluctuating.

I've ordered the slightly more expensive one (vernet) but had a code so got it for £35ish.

We'll see what happens with this one.

Fingers crossed.

Cheers.

Bit of an update.

I bought a new thermostat and was going to fit it myself but the car overheated on the way back from work on friday (got recovered, didn't fancy nursing the car back across the M62) but the car was booked in for a service on saturday.

Got the car serviced and asked them to fit the thermostat.

However, I then got the classic phone call, of everythings fine but....

He said the car was heating up but some of the pipes were staying cool and told its probably the water pump.

So I had that and the belt done too, I did wonder why the air con didnt work when I set off from work....

Close call I reckon, might not have been the thermostat in the first place....Hmm.....

Car is nice and healthy again but I'm a lttle short of cash for the next few weeks.
