If you are interested in a vehicle, or your own, and wish to check information such as the following:

  • VED cost for six months
  • VED cost for twelve months
  • VED status / renewal date
  • MoT status / renewal date
  • Emissions level
  • First registration date
  • Vehicle age
  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Colour
  • Fuel type
  • Engine size

Then you could do no better than to bookmark https://totalcarcheck.co.uk

A very useful site, indeed.

This one is the official DVLA check, more useful for tracking old vehicles:

https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

and it's completely free. You get more information than the Totalcarcheck website, although you would probably get more information than the DVLA if you paid for the Totalcarcheck.

Even the free info on the total car check site leaves something to be desired - it shows the incorrect Road Tax band for my old 9-5 as L, when it is actually K. That makes a big difference! Also the estimated mileage is just a computer's guess based on the car's age, it shows 74,400 when last autumn it actually had over 125k on it. They don't offer a more accurate figure if you pay, but you can only get access to any mileage history recorded on VOSA's records if you have either an MOT certificate or a V5C anyway.

Their website also refers to stolen/recovered vehicle data from MIAFTR (Motor Insurance Anti Fraud and Theft Register) and the Police National Computer. While the first provides information to the industry, and possibly can be legitimately made public for a fee, I very much doubt that they have access to the PNC and reference to it on their website is possibly misleading.

Any website that doesn't have any contact details other than an email address doesn't get my custom. Also try Googling them and see what comes up on aol.co.uk.

As Geoff said that site is way out.

Just for a l looked up my first Saab 9-5 - it was T reg 2.3 SE manual estate which I sold in 2008 with 189k on it. Totalcarcheck estimated it's mileage as 118k. How on earth did they arrive at that when car is now 16 years old and yes; it's still on the road!! I'd say it will now be in region of 230 - 260k

Their computer reckons average mileage is around 7400.

I wish.
