95 2.2tid auto box swap
« on: 19 October 2015, 07:10:49 PM »
Hi, I need a little help before I part with my cash.

My 04 95 2.2tid auto box has failed, virtually no drive, switch off, restart and she runs for a bit, all over the place, revving up, wont rev etc.
Fault codes P0734 O and P0743 A, 4th and 5th lock up and drive ratios issues.

I tried another gearbox ECU, no joy.

I've identified 3 failed solenoids, however:
1) I'm told that fitting them requires extensive calibration
2) There's a good chance I've toasted the box anyway, I drove 60 miles home start stop.
3) The oil was medium brown.

Replacing solenoids could be high risk.

I can get a second hand box from a 2002 petrol.

My Numbers are  FA57A01, this is a 3 yr old recon box.
The replacement is FA57A03

Is this box compatible?

You thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks

Thanks Sgould, very informative.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'll be going from 3.1 top gear ratio to 2.9.

I'm already running 225 50 17's as opposed to 225 45 17's, giving a higher final drive ratio ( 5%). This would bring the ratio back to normal (6.5%).

I'll try and remember to check later.  I'm out most of the day at a funeral.

Interested to know if you've had any negatives from using 225/50s as I've been thinking of moving to them next change.

On the 225 50's, I started using them on my previous estate when I was scrubbing tyres due to camber and trailing arm bushes. The larger tyre wall results in a lot more 'give' in the tyre.
The ride is a lot smoother, speed bumps, white lining and bad road surfaces are a lot better, not as harsh.
Your speedo will read 5% less, ie more accurate and your fuel consumption should improve, 5% higher gearing( approx )

Thanks

I think I'm going to give the 225/50 a go.

Thanks Sgould, I can't find a diesel auto box so the petrol 2.9 final ratio is going in, she was driving and the engine failed, so the box is 'good'.
