Saab 9-5 3ltr V6 Turbo Wagon Cambelt Problem
« on: 25 January 2016, 08:08:26 PM »
I recently purchased a 9-5 3ltr V6 SE Turbo Estate 1999 model year. The car had only done 49000 miles with a full Saab main dealer service history 17 stamps in service book. Just before it was traded in it had been fitted with a new genuine Saab Cambelt Kit along with a full service. The car had only done 500 miles since the service and cambelt change when I picked it up from the dealer who had the car for sale. I drove the car home which was some 220 miles the car ran very smooth without any problems. The following morning I went out to the car checked all levels then started the car. As the idle speed started to come down to normal tick over a screeching noise started which I pin pointed to the rear bank campulley. Once the car was warm the noise disappeared and for any other start ups during the day there was no noise. I phoned the Dealer up told him about the noise he told me to bring car back and they would investigate the noise. They decided to put on another new Cambelt Kit as it was thought perhaps one of the tensioners was faulty. They tested the car from cold start and all seemed to be well. I collected car again did the 220 mile return journey and next morning started car only to find the same screeching noise from same location still there!!! They also gave me the Cambelt kit that came off the car which still looked like new. On hearing the noise I managed to pull cambelt cover back slightly and sprayed a very quick burst of silicone into the area were noise was coming from and it instantly stopped. I contacted the dealer again told him what had happened , he told me to bring car back and once again investigate problem. They ran engine with no cambelt cover on and said they also took the rear bank camshaft cover of to check there was nothing untoward going on in that area. They found the noise was coming from the belt passing over the rear bank camshaft pulley so they re-tensioned the belt as it was slightly loose. Everything back together did a couple of cold morning starts and a road test all seemed to be well. I collected car drove home yet again and you've probably guessed what I am going to say next yes following morning same noise on start up!! The dealer and his mechanic are baffled they have told me now to take it to a garage local to me to get a second opinion. I am hoping that someone on this Forum may be able to give me some advice or if they have come across similar with this engine, it is the petrol version. I have had Saabs before which were the 900 series which I really enjoyed when I saw this one advertised with such a great history and low miles I just had to go for it.

I'm not familiar with the V6 engine.  My workshop manual shows that there are two different cam arrangements.  Have they used the correct kit?

Whereabouts are you? Someone might be able to recommend a good Saab specialist near you.

You car should be the top one...

The workshop manual is known as the Workshop Information System.  Look on the Internet for "Saab WIS".  Usually comes with the "Saab EPC" - Electronic Parts Catalogue.

The CD will only run on an older Windows computer.  I run mine on an Apple Mac with a windows emulator and Vista.

There are a few experienced Saab specialists not too far from you.  We bought our latest Saab from Mark Arnold.  He uses http://www.jpautosbristol.co.uk for all his servicing.  They did some warranty work on our car.  I found them very good.

One's that I have heard good things of are:

Martin at http://www.jamsaab.co.uk in Keynsham
http://www.tr-autos.co.uk in Yeovil

Again thank you for all the info. I will take a run up to jpautos this week, but I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Ive just examined the first belt kit that came off. The belt itself looks like it has been rubbing against the rear of the cambelt cover as in parts of the belt on the side edges there is metal braiding showing through which would explain the screeching sound and when I give it a quick squirt of silicone it lubricates it. Fingers crossed. you've made my evening big thank you.

Went to JP Autos in Bristol who I found very friendly and helpful. Car is booked in for 4th Feb so keeping fingers crossed that they are able to solve the Cambelt problem. Thanks from a Newbie to this forum for advice offered.
