TurboX tracking need Tech2?
« on: 14 July 2011, 11:22:51 AM »
Hi All,

I was getting a rub/ humming sound when taking left turns at town/car park speeds (though driving a little faster than you should, i.e. making a last minute decision to turn left) but not a speed you wouldn't see other people driving!

I thought it might be a bush gone up front or something rotating as it doesn't do it all the time.  Anyway I kept trying to replicate it (making quick left turns) and it got worse and worse, then i figured that as I recently had my rear diff replaced and figure the tracking might not be right, which is causing uneven tyre wear, and the noise i'm getting. So i swapped the tyres on that side front/back and the noise is nowhere near as bad now, back to how it was when i first noticed it. So i'm thinking it's tracking now or a wheel/suspension alignment problem of some sort.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that coz of the XWD I need to get the computer reset using tech2 after having the wheel alignment done, is this right or have i just imagined it?

cheers in advice for any advice.

p.s. I had to replace my TurboX spliter, if you buy one it comes with the rivits to fix it, you dont need to buy extra  ::)
p.p.s. Is Turners Hill saab any good?

Welcome! :)

If you have any work done on any 9-3 tracking or steering etc., you should have the car reset with the Tech2 computer at a dealer.  Reason for this is that the car has stability correction fitted.  There's a steering angle sensor and a yaw sensor and wheel sensors.

For example........ If the steering angle says that the car is turning and the yaw sensor says it isn't, the computer will assume a skid and try to brake odd wheels to correct it. That might make things worse. At best it just wears out the brakes.

But I don't think it makes a noise unless it thinks it needs to use the ABS. I've had cornering noises on account of tyre wear, and bearings, and bent brake backplates.

I would get it looked at.

I've not heard anything bad about Turners Hill Saab.  I've only used them for mail order parts, and they've been very good at supplying those.

It's the steering angle sensor that needs to be reset, Is it not just for cars equipped with ESP though????

I must admit, this seems a little strange to me. Assuming the steering geometry was correct when the angle sensor was calibrated, and the work done has reset the geometry to within tolerance, why would the angle sensor need re-calibrating?

i'm not saying it's out, I just wanted to find out if i needed to take the car to a main dealer with  tech2 if anyone touches the tracking.

BTW i've noticed the sound is worse in the wet or after it's been raining.

The tolerance can vary quite a bit on a car and then if anything has worn or taken a knock in the past it could be "correct" but different to how it was from the factory, I think it would be unlikely that not doing the calibration would cause a problem but it's really something that should be done anyway.
