Starting problems on 2002 9-3

We've been having a problem with my wife's 9-3. The engine would turn over but not run occasionally so we took it to a reputable local mechanic who replaced the neutral safety switch. It seemed to cure the problem until she went shopping one day and ended up stranded in the parking lot when the same problem returned, engine turns over but won't start. We went back to the car several hours later and it started up just fine. Our mechanic picked the car up and kept it for several days trying to get the problem to repeat itself with no sucess and couldn't find anything else wrong with it. My wife picked the car up yesterday afternoon, drove it around for a while and brought it home. An hour or so later she went back out to check it and of course it turned over but wouldn't start. Her mechanic came by our house this morning to check it and it started right up. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Whatever it is does not leave a fault code in the computer. If anyone has any ideas or opinions they would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds very like the "warm start problem".  The cure in 99% of cases (it is a petrol engine isn't it?) is to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

You can check the resistance of the CPS at the connector by the throttle body.  Only two of the three pins will show a reading.  It should be between 770 and 950 ohms.  But it varies with temperature.

Thanks for the reply. That certainly resembles the problem on my wife's car. I'm going to ask my tech to change out the CPS on it Monday and see if it gets rid of the problem. Its not an expensive fix so I haven't got much to lose. I'd do it myself but I'm recuperating from recent surgery and can't do much of anything psychical for a while. Again, thanks for the help.

Another vote for the crankshaft position sensor.  Replacing the NSS was a sensible first step as I believe in nine times out of ten, that's the problem.  When it fails, then CPS.  It is not much consolation but at least you know you are not facing the NSS problem in the near future once the CSS is sorted.

We had the CPS replaced three days ago and, so far, no more problems. I just wanted to thank everyone for their help.
