denso nav disc stuck

denso nav touchscreen audio combo is playing up,

the touch screen isn't coming on and it isn't responding to any key presses nor the steering wheel controls, the drive in the unit sounds like it is trying to read a disc and not being successful, tried pulling the related fuses but as soon as the fuse goes back in it starts whirring away again. The unit is connected to a parrot hands free that does still operate

if I pull the unit out to try to remove the disc is that even possible to get into the drive once it is removed, TBH I don't recall if there is a disk in it

The disc slot in the Denso is used for the satnav map DVD.  You can't use it to play an audio CD unless the map disc removed.

Is the Parrot connected directly in some way, or is it connected via the 18 pin socket in the loom behind the aircon control panel?

But it does sound as if the head unit is failing.  If that's the case, an aftermarket replacement is the way to go.  Normally it's just the DVD that fails, but if the screen is having problems too, it seems to be beyond saving.   

Saab will offer you a replacement head unit for a huge sum.  Something like £3750 last time I looked, but it's still a unit designed 15 years ago.  You can do a lot better with a modern unit.  Most will include the bluetooth phone, and often offer the option of a rear view camera too.

If you go this route look at the units that offer Apple CarPlay and/or MS Mirroring.  These work with your mobile phone and could save you buying duplicate apps for each separate unit.

If it has failed, I've just received my aftermarket head unit so my working Denso sat nav will be up for grabs, if you'd rather stick with the stock head unit. Obviously you'd need someone with a TechII to marry it to your car.

I am aware of that, as the maps on the dvd are so old I don't use the nav system

The Parrot is one that does music streaming as well as the phone?

When mine failed it was just the DVD bit and the map.  The rest of the radio and CD changer in the boot still worked as normal.  Losing the touch screen seems that you have a more serious fault than the DVD drive.

The parrot does stream, a thumb drive has plenty music to keep me entertained.

Will pull the nav unit out and see if I can get the disc out

unit out of the car, partially stripped it down and removed the errant disc but when powered up is still looking for the disc with the laser head rocking back and forward

a more thorough strip down to isolate the drive

there is a ribbon cable that connects the unit's motherboard to the DVD drive daughter board, its a simple ZIF connection, so removed that connection to disable the DVD drive - working on the premise that the drive problem was upsetting the whole unit. For good measure, while I had the thing stripped, reseated the ribbon connections to the touch screen

back to car and it now starts up, screen works as do steering wheel controls, perhaps the continual read cycle of the laser head was interrupting the boot process of the unit, perhaps not - either way I will keep an eye on fka's android install thread

from the label on the drive looks like it might be possible to just replace that part dvs 3022

Wow!  Things have moved on a lot in the last few years.  When I looked, there was only one source of DVD drives from Germany and they were over twice that price!!
 
Unless you are certain it's a DVD fault, even $188 + plus post and import duty, collection costs, etc. is a risk, when a new modern head unit isn't much more.

I did find a laser only back then for €80, but I wasn't prepared to dismantle any further, with my big fingers and just on the offchance it was only the laser.
