New ECU & Speed Calibration
« on: 17 April 2018, 10:49:14 PM »
Hi All,

This may just be in my head but since I had my ECU replaced (56 plate 1.8t), my speedo seems to be further out of step with actual speed than before. Is that likely or possible?

Had to get the ECU replaced as was throwing up the same error code (P606 or 605?) with increasingly shorter intervals between faults!
Unit was Tech 2'ed, couldn't save my Hirsch settings so just back to the default 150hp. :-(

Thanks Guys!

Terry

Hirsch still exist.  Talk to them.  They can authorise a re-install, surely?

Sounds like the wheel size was not correctly set when the new ECU was added to the car *or* it was set incorrectly before but it was a closer match to real speed as there is some leniency in the speed settings.

For reference, I did contact Hirsch. Unfortunately their reply was:-

"The old ECU needs to be programmed back, using the IPRO prior to changing the ECU.
Then the tuning can be reinstalled in the car."

All fine & dandy if you can do that. Mine wasn't playing the game at all so nothing salvaged. :-(

WOW, that's bad service! I'm currently trying to decide between Hirsch and maptun and that's putting me off Hirsch very much so!

I think what Hirsch are saying is that if you don’t officially remove the upgrade from the old ECU, the licence stays with it.  Otherwise you could sell the old ECU and get another - free?? - upgrade on the new one.  That’s no different from the Maptuner.  As I understand it, the Maptuner box is permanently linked to your VIN once the upgrade is installed.  You can’t install the upgrade and sell the box on.

When we removed the Hirsch upgrade from the old Vector so that our grandson could get insurance when he took it over, it was done officially with the IPRO at the local dealer.  So the upgrade would be available if a new owner ever wanted to use it. Hirsch send a code so it is properly recorded by them.  That sounds fine in theory, but they charged for the code, and the garage charged for the work and I felt a bit ripped off.

Afterwards, I spoke to Karl at NoobTune and he said that the old programme could just be overwritten.  Doing that, would lose the upgrade licence, but with the charges that Hirsch and Saab had in place, it would have been the cheaper option to have done that and then bought a new upgrade on the discount scheme.

In theory though you should just be able to use the maptuner on the new ECU if it is coded to your vin, there are other protections you can put in the software to make it impossible to reprogram to a new car from there as you can make any attempt to change just the vin fail by screwing with the checksum routines which mean the only way you can reprogram the ECU is with a full flash of the original software.
