Low coolant level :(
« on: 28 June 2024, 06:34:02 PM »
Away for the weekend.  Got in the car this morning and the low coolant level warning appeared.  The level is indeed low.  There is no visible sign of leakage.  We are away for the weekend, so if you see me stranded on the M40 tomorrow, give me a wave as you go by.

I'm suspecting the pressure release in the cap at the moment, but we shall see.

On Wednesday I had "low coolent level" (on the M40) and ended up in the Beaconsfield Services waiting for the AA. It was a split hose, but a quick fix sufficed ...

Maybe if I avoid the M40...

I can't see any leak at all.  I topped it up and ran the engine up to temperature, still no visible leaks.  I have some large containers of water on board, and hope to get home before I investigate.  Fingers crossed for tomorrow...

Back home!  I gave a nod to Beaconsfield Services as we passed! :)

I'm going to fit a new coolant cap.  When I played with it, the release pin was a bit sticky.  It may be that it was this that stuck open, or opened prematurely, last July when the car boiled up when I went up a high pass in the Pyrenees.

Quite how low was it Will? I get that message annually and it seems to need a few spoonfuls every year.

It was a out a couple of cup fulls.  I've had it before in similar circumstances to you, but this was sudden drop.  I haven't been able to check it today to see if it lost anything coming back from Warwick last night.

No coolant lost on the 100 mile trip home frpm Warwick.

This arrived this morning.   I've decided that it's worth changing.  If the original cap is sticking intermittently, it would allow the coolant to boil off, which would also explain why the car boiled up driving up the Pyrenees pass last summer without the temp gauge showing a high temperature.

Changed the cap this evening.  Comparing it with the old cap, it's definitely "different".  The pressure release valve is tighter and the cap and innards rotate smoothly against each other.

That's all I did today.  After 1 week, I'm still testing positive for Covid and still feeling rough... :(
