Xenon bulb failure

I noticed the nearside bulb had turned purple on Friday morning so went to fit a spare I though I had... except that I didn't have a spare so ended up robbing one from the 2.0 petrol for the TTiD

The originals are Philips D1S, 85415 seems a decent reference number, and apparently around 4300k colour temperature

They seem quite expensive, and as I needed a pair for one of the OG Aero's have bought 3 Osram equivalents, 66140 reference number

Fortunately the bulb came out of the holder fairly easily on the petrol, for the TTID I ended up using a small pry bar to carefully generate the necessary anti clockwise rotational force

Sometime over Christmas, I should be able to do a side by side comparison

Which fixing clamp does the NG9-5 have?  The D1S bulbs are the same in the OG9-5 and the Carlsson, but the fixings are different.

The 9-5 has a metal ring with a couple of flat "handles" and the Carlsson has a split ring that clamps round the bulb.

The NG 9-5 has the same arrangement as the NG 9-3, a plastic surround that is rotated into places to secure the bulb in position

Parts disgrams have the same number for the bulbs, so one of the reasons for getting 3 is to test the interchangeability.

It's not as though I won't have a use for the spare...

The bulbs arrived before Christmas and a pair was fitted to the green 9-5. The light output was noticeably better, confirming the MOT testers comments.

This morning I fitted the Osram bulb to the petrol 9-5 NG. No problems with fitting it but the colour temperature is different, at least to the human eye. I tried to capture it with a camera, but they are just as discerning as humans.

The Osram is warmer, less blue.

Osram specs say 4500k https://www.osram.com/ecat/XENARC%20ORIGINAL-Xenon%20headlight%20lamps-Car%20lighting-Automotive/com/en/GPS01_1056953/ZMP_83508/

Philips specs say up to 4300k https://www.philips.ae/c-p/85415VIC1/xenon-vision-xenon-car-headlight-bulb

So if anything the Osram ones should be slightly more blue  ???

I suppose I should see if Osram have a product checker to confirm it is genuine as I know that there are reproductions, but on the other hand, I have also read that Xenon bulbs have a running in time...

Just a link to a service message regarding special bulbs for the OG 9-5 and 9-3, related to a compatability issue

9285 147 294 is the special part number, compatible with the problematic Valeo LAD5G control module

#5
Yesterday I received a Philips D1S bulb, supposedly original spec.

Fitted it and the output was the same colour as the Osram's, so not white enough.

I downloaded an app to a phone which said it could measure colour temperature. The Osram type showed about 4800k, when the spec is up to 4300

The ones originally in the 9-5 showed 5800k, from which I deduce the rating should be about 5300k

Does anybody know what the orginal specification is ?

This is what I took out - the part number seems to refer to a 4300k bulb these days

This isn't just a running in problem is it ?

I had hoped that the intensity would be specified in WIS, but all I can find is this...

Light Color

White light has a different color rating than regular headlamps. The range of white light that is acceptable is broad when compared to halogens. Therefore, some variation in headlight coloring between the right and left headlamp will be normal. One HID at the end of the normal range may appear considerably different in color from one at the other end of the range. Difference in color is normal. Replace the arc tube only if the arc tube is determined to be at the bulb inoperative stage.

Reads as though they want no liability for colour differences....

I have gone a different route & bought a used bulb, with the right part number

Not my preference, and life will be unknown, but as it's for a car that's parked up that I robbed, it won't be the end of the world

I bought a used bulb off ebay using the part number, for the princely sum of £12.99 delivered, off a BMW Mini Countryman/Paceman

Fitted it this morning - (I'm getting a dab hand at it now) and it works and matches the other side

So, perhaps it's time to look at the Mini parts bin for more information
