Warbly noise at 45mph - wheel bearing??
« on: 11 March 2026, 12:29:05 PM »
I'm really pleased with how the Aero is running since I gotit back from Bagnalls after the protracted traction control/bad earth saga!!

But one thing i have noticed is there is a wheel related warbly sort of noise that seems to come in/peak at around 45mph. It is a higher pitch than the usual wheel bearing noise that I have heard before (which seemed to occur more around 60 - 70mph and be more lower pitch). It also seems to be coming from the front of the car rather than the rear.

The tone doesn't change as you accelerate or decelerate through this speed range but the volume of it does, and if you put the car in neutral or press the clutch down and coast through 45mph, it is still there.

Is this likely to be a wheel bearing? Anyone else had this before?

Have you got the bent metal wear detectors on the front brakes?  If so. your pads may be worn out.  But you should also get a squeal when braking.

If it's one of the fronts you'd expect the noise to get worse as you turn, i.e. when the weight goes onto whichever is the bad wheel.

So, it doesn't vary with engine spped (in the range)

It doesn't vary with driven engaged or not ?

Any variation with engine speed if the clutch is dipped ?

If no to all three, then I suggest it is nothing to do with the drivechain, but something else, like cabin fan with something in the way, (I had that recently, didn't realise the fan was on at first), something aerodynamic, loose

Just prompts

On second thoughts, I did have a whistle a while ago on the 9-5.  It amended and went if I turned the zircon on and off.  Getting the refrigerant topped up stopped the noise.

No squeal from brakes, discs look fine, and braking seems normal. This morning though as I drove at low speed, it sounds a bit like binding brakes. It did get a bit louder when turning right out of our road.

I tried to record the 45mph warbly wheel bearing type sound (that I also noted at a lower volume around 20mph) with my phone, but from the phone holder the sound is less apparent than it is at the driver's ears!!!!

Been using the Aero again today for the first time in a few weeks. The warbly noise is still there. Peaks at around 45mph then goes quiet again, but is apparent again, sounding the same at above 60mph. It is there whether accelerating, decelerating, or even coasting in neutral/clutch down. It is there when I turn the climate off and set it to recirc.

I've noticed also there is a much broader rubbing noise that sounds the same as when the rear brakes were binding on my son's Focus. He needed a new caliper, but both my front calipers are refurbed (by Bigg Red) bigger Aero brake calipers which were fitted with new discs and pads at the same time, and haven't done that many miles.

Both front discs look fine and I can't see any evidence of excessive brake dust on the front alloys. They don't feel too hot after driving either. The car is braking fine and there is no brake squeal.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe a wheel bearing is shot, but both fronts were done a handful of years ago (and not done excessive miles since). I do believe the front dampers and top mounts do need doing. One of the dampers has had a misting of oil on the last couple of MOTs, and the car has had a front suspension knock since I bought it in 2017, but has never been highlighted in any service or MOT. It has been on my list to get the dampers and top mounts done for a while, but the long running traction control fault saga put it on the back burner!!!

Could it be that knackered suspension mounts etc could be transmitting noise into the body that would not otherwise be there?

Or might there be a driveshaft issue?

If the noise varies with roadspeed, and cornering does not materially change the tone, then I would be looking to the wheel bearings. Put each wheel up in turn & see if they are noisy,or a little bit rumbly. Take the brake pads out if you need to eliminate pad noise
