Thanks for all the replies.
I live in the pennines and used to run an E280 Merc estate - RWD and auto with no traction control and didnt get stuck. Last 2 winters ran some winter tyres.
Wondering whether to bother with the Saab. Wondering whether traction control helps?
Why no winter setting on the autobox as the vauxhalls have it?

Thanks for the advice.

Winter setting was on the early cars, but dropped soon after the flappy paddles were introduced.  All it did was allow you to start off in 3rd.  You can do that manually with the paddles.

When you have winter tyres on you inherently feel safer in snow and bad weather - if that makes sense? You actualy don't mind that fact you might have to drive on snow rather than worrying. It also helps you when you need to take evasive action when others totally mishandle their cars.

At first I found that driving with winter tyres was actually significantly more scary than with summer tyres, mostly due to seeing all the other drivers come sliding around the place not being fully in control of their cars, it is kind of off putting at least until you realise you can avoid people far more easily  ;D
