Mysterious noise

Had slow starting problems recently which seem to have resolved themselves after having the EML light come on a few times. BUT - went out on Friday evening and after about 10 minutes the engine started to run roughly so turned round to go home and changed to our other car and it ran fine. Didn't use it on Saturday and started it up this afternoon. There is a rustling/crackling sound coming from the offside of the engine. The drive belt and tensioner was replaced in 2013 - done about 46k miles since, the alternator was replaced in January 2017, and the crankshaft pulley was replaced in May 2017 at 175k miles. Any ideas as to what the noise could be?

Started her up again yesterday afternoon and the noise now seems to be more of a hissing sound which when I wiggled the large hose to the turbo that has the MAF sensor in it it seemed to get quieter.  Do I assume that this hose has a split in it?

If it's the one with the square reinforcement ribs in it, I've seen one cracked one that leaked and one that had split around three sides of one of the squares and opened like a flap.

A friend came round to see me today and I started the car up to let him listen to it as he is very practical and installs and services sewage treatment plants for a living. He said that the noise on start up is the water pump - only lasts for less than a minute.  Does this mean that it's on the way out ?  Having looked at WIS the replacement method is incredibly complicated and involves raising the engine and dismantling the suspension and driveshaft on that side.

Anyone know an easier way?

Well on the last couple of start ups no worrying noises!  Took it to the garage who service the car and their diagnostics registered code P0010-5 Intake camshaft position actuator circuit open Bank 1.   EPC or WIS doesn't refer to this part. The only part that seems to be similar is the vacuum box part no. 5333950 which sits on the end of the intake manifold.  Any other suggestions?

I presume that's a generic reader they used? P0010-5 isn't listed in WIS for the 2.2 diesel.

Yes it would be - so is this a false code? And what is it more likely to be, bearing in mind that it is a 100 mile round trip to the nearest Saab specialist.

Audax

You sure that they didn't write down P0105 or P1105 incorrectly which would be far more plausible error codes for a 9-5.

I see both those codes refer to the Manifold Air Pressure sensor or as the EPC calls it the intake air temperature sensor. I replaced that just under three years ago with a Bosch part when I did all the vacuum lines and leak off pipes.  I will check it at the weekend and I am also going to give the car a dose of Wynn's Professional Turbo Cleaner and Extreme Diesel System Clean.  I used them both on my Astra G which has the same basic diesel engine as the Saab after it failed to start and the AA man suggested leak off pipes, vacuum hoses and injector seals! The Astra now runs sweetly and the Wynn's also cured a sticking tappet and I am with the RAC!

You were right Audax, the MAP sensor was filthy when I removed it. A few squirts of electrical contact cleaner sorted that out and impressed SWMBO!   I have also given it a double dose of Wynn's Diesel Extreme Cleaner and Turbo Cleaner and it is running much better.

Now we have the heater blower problem as per my latest post!

It's worth doing a 6 month or yearly service of that MAP sensor, they get caked up and eventually die. I would think that some regular cleaning would help a lot.
