Oil change on 2.2tid

Have just been on the Shell Lube Finder at Shell.co.uk and it's recommending Shell Helix HX7 AG 5W-30. I will probably get my indy to do the change as I'm a bit hamfisted mechanically and I'm a bit of a noob at Shell Oils I just used to put Castrol Magnatec 10W40 in my 9k and it was 110k when I sold it.

Whats everyones thoughts on 5W30 HX7 AG? My next service isnt due till May next year  which is the 54k service. So Oil, filter and fuel filter as far as I can tell from WIS.

Found this site http://www.smithandallan.com/ selling all the Shell brands and HX7 is priced at £46.07 for 6 litres delivered. Hows that sound? Cheaper to buy bigger quantities but as I'm just starting out just thought a min amount. Guess I'm going to have to look at the Shell site again to see the difference between Ultra and HX7.

Any advice?

Just serviced and mot'd (flew through with no problems) my 2.2 estate. I supplied my Indy with Mobil 1 last year, but this time I also went for Shell Helix Ultra 5w 40 based upon the recommendations on here. Engine seems a bit quieter, but to my ear not hugely so as yet.

Well - back from a nice short jolly down to Penzance. Car did over 1000 miles and still returned a pleasing 48 mpg with mostly motorway driving 75ish down there and back and a small amount of poodling around Penzance/St Ives/Sennen area.

Put £80 diesel in before we left and then another £55 in Corwall before coming home which worked out just over 21 gallons for 996 which works out at about 47/48 mpg so all in all very very happy and the Hirsch remap seems well worth the money. 45 mph + and no need to change down in the gears to overtake........woopeee.

Also the Shell Helix Ultra 5w 40 seems to have made the engine quieter and much smoother - so another plus.

On the downside - pulled out of my drive the next morning to fetch 4 legs and fury from kennels and 200 yds up road some old boy decided to collide with me. I thought if i brake he'll hit the fornt and if I accelrate he'll either just miss or hit the back (if it had been the aero then he'd have missed) and he hit the side. Driver side rear passenger door, wheel arch, bumper and alloy wheel! Urgh - mind you you should see the mess he made of his Toyota Aygo. Pulled front bumper, wing and headlamp off!!! All at 25 mph.

My car already at Saab dealer in Ipswich and only estate they could get for me was a brand new Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi with 200 miles on clock!!!! I accepted that and it arrived next morning. Quite surprised how much smaller inside it is so should have asked for A6 estate Can't praise Adrian Flux enough for what they have done and how I'm being kept informed on my car etc. No hassle. Lets see how they get on with colour matching this (what I call) metallic primer grey!

Sorry to heat that Jim - Im sure it'll be back better than new. Be very fussy (as I'm sure you will be) about the quality of the job. Dont accept it until youre 110% happy!

On a positive note - good to hear that excellent fuel consumption - I start my search again for a similar car, having just got rid of two daughters to Manchester and Canterbury Uni's in the same week with a huge Kamei roof box strapped to my Aero saloon - it did it OK and at 35 (SID) mpg not bad at all but it looks like a real 10mpg improvement could be realised in a 2.2tid!

Thanks chaps for the nice comments. It seems I'll be collecting it on 4th Oct. I'm expecting it to be good as I've heard good reports of the compnay Cox's Saab use.

Paul - I'm really impressed with its fuel economy. This Audi I've got at the moment doesn't seem to do as well which was quite a shock but then it's now only got 267 miles on the clock so prob will be poor.

Must say so far so good with information I'm getting on state of claim etc. They even give you a free insurance that covers the remainder of the car hire if the other side disagree - and yes it is free!!! The chap that delivered the car said they had one person who was so sure he would win that he didn't both with it and cancelled. He had an AMDB9 on hire at 1220 + VAT a day. Apparently all seemed like it was going well (it went to court) and driver was confident until someone from nearby shop located some CCTV footage - yep you guessed, it showed this guy in the wrong and he'd had the DB9 for 6 months. Cost him nearly £250,000 in hire charges - that insurance would have paid for that! Wow
