after being a few years away from running a Saab, i'm thinking of buying another one. my last saab was a 1.9D vector sport (150) which had no end of trouble with the EGR valve - i like the look of the newer 9-3 but wondered how reliable the newer engine is - have they overcome the swirl flap and EGR issues?

The ttid has a different design egr and inlet manifold to that of the DTH (150) tid. In my opinion the ttid seems more reliable with its new design.

Mr Linear

I am going to look at an Aero TTdi on Sat morning.

With the current situation not sure if it would not be better to have a 150 Tid and Hirsch
it as opposed to having the TTdi, which seems rare.

Any advice?

i much preffer the look of the aero as opposed to the standard TDi, but agree they are pretty rare (especially up here in scotland) and especially if like me, you want it in black with the twin exhaust AND sat nav.

No problems with my TTiD 08 Aero convertible.
It came with every available extra and I had the Hirsch upgrade and springs fitted  8)
Had it just over a year and a half now.......

Hi Mr L

IMHO the Saab position shouldn't have any bearing on the decision, any decent indy can fettle the TTiD. I know I'd trust mine, and they're not Saab specialists, just damn good car people.

The insurers will probably look kinder on the TTiD than the Hirsch treated 150, even though the TTiD has better performance statistics without Hirsch than the Aero with. There seems to be a bit more kit on the Aero too (In theory.) I've the 9-3 brochure if you'd like it emailed.

Mr Linear

Thanks Geoff....

I was just thinking in terms of parts commonality with other brands, not sure if anyone else uses the 180 TTid

I would like a facelift 2.0T manual Aero, but they are like hen's teeth!

Thanks for the offer with regards to the brochure.... the two copies you have already kindly sent me will do for the time being.  ;D

That's pretty good for 180 BHP. I can't get any better with my 150, but then I read somewhere once that the TTid is a more fuel-efficient motor. I would be very interested to see close-up pics of the inlet manifold design!

wrighar

We're getting 52 to 55mpg on 200mile runs at 70-80mph

42-44mpg on the 10 mile each way comutes

early 2008 93ss Aero TTid with all the heavy goodies (leccy seats/Bose) and NOT the low emission/economy gearbox.

Mr Linear

My recent experience of a TTid Aero '08 was not great... :-(

However, during the test drive the car (when on song) was very swift, but in my opinion did not give me the same smile level as as either my current 9-5 Aero or SWMBO's old 1.8t (Hirsch Vert).

Currently I am getting 22-23mpg Urban in my '06 9-5 Aero Manual, however in the better weather this rises to around 25mpg.

I used to have a 2.2 TID 9-5 and got 31mpg Urban most of the year round, and had EML/EGR/MAP sensor problems etc.

I have had no major problems with my Aero in the last two years.

With the current differential in petrol/diesel price at the pump, the potential problems that may occur with low mileage diesel driving and the fact that petrol Saab's are very good value, I think that a good Excel spread sheet is in order!!

Mind you the TTid was a beautiful looking car and if it had been a 2.0T, I would have bought it!

Mr L.

Bought my 58 plate Aero TTid in August 2009 when it was 11 months old. The wife uses it to poodle around visiting her clients (hairdressing), all within 10 miles of home. I get to use it on weekends if I'm lucky, when I give it a good seeing to (clearing the DPF, honest). Only once did the DPF warning come on when I was working away for several weeks, the missus took it up the bypass and all was sorted. No problems at all, average mpg for the life of the car is 40.1, and more torque than most petrol engines in its class. Diesel might be pennies more than petrol, but distance travelled per £ is far better. Servicing once a year, similar cost to petrol models so what's the fuss. Use quality fuel (not supermarket) and it'll not work out any more expensive to run. I'm a former petrol head (V8's & V12's) and unless I won the lottery would never change back, diesel is the way forward. Recently test drove the Jag XF, unless you went for the supercharged model, the 3 litre twin turbo diesel is the only model to have. All cars/engines have their problems, it's just that only the complaints are heard, so give the old lines a rest and accept that the TTid is in a class of its own for performance with economy. I'm keeping mine 1 year longer than I normally keep my cars as it has been 100% reliable, is fun to drive, and still amazes those who think it has to be a petrol to go as well as it does.

saab talladega turbo

My ttid aero vert shites over anything else in its class. 70mpg on cruise and power at any speed on any gear.
