Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / thanks for everything
« on: 25 December 2012, 10:52:11 PM »
So I've left the fold  :'(. I never really got attached to the Griffin  :o . I think it was because it was automatic. And then petrol went through the roof. And I just wasn't doing the mileage to justify such a car, and if anything went wrong with it I don't think I could afford to fix it...............................And I really preferred my old CS  :o.
Now I've dropped a couple of sizes, to an old Suzuki Swift. Ha ha; I know, sacrilige but it is a bangernomics motor not expected to last a year and not the sort of thing that will be getting any TLC.
Maybe sometime in the future I will find another pre-GM 9000.

Funny story about my old CS. It may live again as.................an Aero 8) 8) 8). The guy who bought it was really surprised at how rust-free it was for a 19 year old car while his much newer Aero was falling apart. He hopes to transfer everything over to my old girl. I sold it to him for €50 and a spin in it when its an aero  :) so lets hope he gets it done 8)

Almost forgot the important bit......Thanks to everyone on here for all their help for the last number of years, enjoy your christmas and happy SAABing for 2013 and beyond

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / sunroof problem
« on: 28 June 2012, 02:26:15 AM »
Was trying to get the sunroof working on the Griffin but I've confused myself.
Switch was faulty so I changed it for the one from the old 1993. Now I had power but still no movement, so I dropped down the motor to see was it working and it seemed to be fine. My next move was to wind the sunroof up and down a few times to free it because it must be siezed from not being used. Then I wound it back and forward a couple of times and smeared vaseline on the seal and around the edge of the opening.

Now for the confused bit. I lined up the hole on the big gear with the centre of the small wheel as per Haynes while the roof was up. Strangely this was between the two automatic stops. Now the problem is that the roof tilts and slides like new except that it does not stop at closed. It goes straight through from fully tilted to fully slid without stopping.

What is the proper set up for roof and motor? I think that if I close the roof and drop the motor and spin it with front of the button until it stops then re-install it that would be equal to the roof being slid forward under normal operation. My confusion comes from the fact that in tilting the roof the gear would only turn about 10 mm before meeting the second automatic stop. Surely this is not enough to fully lift the roof?

Any suggestions will be investigated in anticipation of the next sunny day (that probably gives me about a month ;D)

Also, have any of you dismantled the centre console switch? Are the spring contacts the only likely fault? Is it worth polishing them up and putting the switch back in? The older model works backways on the rear windows so if the proper one is easily reparable, I'd like to give it a go.

Thanks Guys

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Re: Changing handbrake cable
« on: 09 April 2012, 04:03:25 PM »
Right so, it looks like I should be able to fiddle things through by taking out the centre console and feeling for the little clip. Might have to loosen the seat to make a little room under the carpet and slacken the tank mount slightly. If it goes wrong, I'll just have to do it the hard way ;D
Thanks for the confidence boost

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Changing handbrake cable
« on: 07 April 2012, 01:18:04 AM »
Hi Guys
Quick question. Do I really have to take out seats and carpet to change a handbrake cable or is there some secret method known only to the gurus on this forum. It just seems like a huge amount of stripping out to get to one little plastic clip.
Thanks

Paddysaab, also check the condition of the brake hose.  When they get old they can start to break down internally, acting as a one way valve letting the pressure/flow into the caliper but stopping it releasing quickly.
Mechanic mentioned this but I thought it was a bit of a tale, so I have to take one of the old car for next time I'm under.
Just don't get much weather for this sort of thing

Thanks for the help guys

Ride height looks standard and there is less than 85K on her.
Compared to the old CS with more than 100K more miles this is much softer but doesn't feel like the shocks are gone.
In fact it passed its NCT only a few weeks ago.
I'll do a bit of measuring on Monday

Thanks guys,
Handbrake cable does sound like a possibility.
Will a CS cable fit a CD?

« on: 24 January 2012, 11:05:43 PM »
They are driving me nuts scraping the road every time I hit a bit of a bump.
I can trim a bit off the front ones but don't want to cut the SAAB ones on the back.
Would you guys just take them off or is there some adjustment can be made to the suspension which seems to be much softer than the CS.
I'm wondering if the 1993 CS springs would be a straight swop or are they exactly the same and just a waste of time.
Or would the 19mm ARB from the 1993 be better than the 18mm one that is currently on it.
Its easy take the mudflaps off but to my mind they are showing up the soft suspension. Is the 2.3 CD really that much heavier than the 2.0 CS?

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Brakes problem
« on: 24 January 2012, 10:51:41 PM »
There are two possibly connected issues with the brakes on the CD.
The left rear brake is sticking but mechanic reckons the caliper is working perfectly.
The pedal sticks sometimes. Mostly when you are gently slowing, like going downhill or approaching a corner and the car changes down. The pedal sticks more often when the brake is heating up :(.
Any suggestions appreciated

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Re: Thermostat - how hard is it to get to?
« on: 16 January 2012, 10:42:38 PM »
Make sure you have the right thermostat and gasket.
There is a cutout in the top of the thermostat seat. If the gasket doesn't fill the seat fully water will seep out.

Go on, guess how I know that ::)

Its ain't easy. Loads of pipes to remove and they were all stuck tight on mine with age. Mark their locations before you start and you won't go wrong when reassembling. The biggest problem is that there is very little space to do anything. Be careful not to drop the studs from the housing (the bottom one is a pig). The little hole in the thermostat goes to the top.
You will lose a little coolant so don't forget to top it up and then make sure you have  no airlock left by checking that all the pipes get to temp.
Its akward but not too difficult, allow a good hour and do it indoors if you can. You can do without rushing because of approaching rain or cold.

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Re: Heater fan - '95 CSE
« on: 13 December 2011, 02:59:02 AM »
Sounds like it could be the resistor? in the fan speed controller on top of the fan housing. There is a little box on top with I think 4 wires going into it with one of them melted. The part number is I think TS1205 , but I will check tomorrow.

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Re: temp guage too low
« on: 13 December 2011, 02:50:42 AM »
Thanks for the replies.
When I took out the old stat, it was tightly closed. It opened about the same temp as the new one but closed quicker.
The fan comes on when the gauge is about 4mm above the blue part and never goes much higher. Actual engine temp seems fine but mileage is slightly down (27ish) so the car must be running a little rich.

I changed the thermostat because the temp gauge was barely moving. This didn't solve the problem. Is the temp sensor the next step and is that it near the thermostat?
