Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Automatic divorcing...
« on: 07 November 2025, 09:27:42 AM »
One of the 9-5's has been laid up for a few months, with the battery disconnected to preserve it

Reconnecting, she started first time & she had an MOT yesterday, which she passed. Strangely, there was no sound from the radio.

Fortunately, I had the Tech 2 with me, so I connected it & went into the audio settings. Quite surprised to see a divorce had taken place, so a quick ceremony was arranged & she's married again.

I thought that you had to positively divorce a head unit befor using in another car, but perhaps not...

I have a VW gearbox, which came attached to the engine I wanted, where the same thing happened to the bottom of the bellhousing

The resutant product is very crumbly & powdery

I found it strange that the Oven Pride website has no material safety sheets or similar...

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Whining gearbox, manual
« on: 19 October 2025, 11:46:12 AM »
The green car has been a little bit whiney, especially when cold in 1st gear. Nothing like a classic Mini though

I was prepping for the MOT yesterday & had a listen while she was up in the air

In neutral I could hear it when spinning the NSF wheel forwards, but not backwards. Rather than a constant whine, it's actually more like a mechanical clicking

The noise is loudest from an area in front to the driveshaft, close to the diff rather than the top of the gearbox

I'm not looking to do a gearbox rebuild, but neither do I particularly want it to go bang. Looking through my paperwork I did a gearbox oil change a couple of years ago using the proper GM red stuff.

Any ideas ?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Re: Tank straps
« on: 19 October 2025, 11:34:00 AM »
Just doing some pre-mot inspection yesterday on a car that had new straps fitted two years ago

I saw that there was some wrinkling of the straps on the rear, so rubbed my finger across them & the protection came off revealing rust

So then it was wire brush around the bend at the rear & the drop at the front, followed by Bilt Hamber. Hemmerite to follow.

Hopefully, this will extend their life

Wash my mouth out, but don't forget that the Insignia parts bin contains many of the same components, this site might be useful to put in your favourites

https://webautocats.com/en-gb/epc/vauxhall/g09/p12/14/

The Saab part number is unique, but that's probably because of the metal bracket, rather than the operating bits, for some reason I think I have looked at this before, eg

Are you sure it's engine oil...

Many Happy Returns... and don't eat it all at once

Looks like I have a right hand spare... and it's painted black & on the car

I need to let the paint harden & then I can polish & blend it in, but for now it's very usable & a lot better than it was, thanks Will

While I had the paint can out I also addressed some other scratches on the front bumper and the near side rear bumper that were there when I got the car. I'm a bit better/experienced on bodywork now than when I got the Dame Edna

Finally I had needed to remove one of the wheel arch liners and two of the studs (black plastic 10mm nuts normally) had snapped off. I had a go at fixing those & was successful. Used a grinder to flatten the remaining protrusion, a 6mm drill to get an initial cenre point to drill from and them a 3mm drill to create the hole so that one of the usual 10mm head self tap body screws could create a thread. I did both of them, including the one at the very top of the wheelarch.

Ah, interesting, my other half showed me a FB post at the weekend of a poorly 9-5NG, didn't know it was you.

It will have been a burst brake pipe, if it's the same as the one that failed on mine, it will have been the difficult to get to one above the fuel tank.

A dual brake circuit works in case of a master cylinder failure. If brake fluid is leaking out with each press of the pedal, eventually there will be none left for the other circuit

Glad it's sorted, if not back with you yet

It's a bit of a fiddly job.

NeoBrothers was the source for my replacement on the DE, if you are sourcing your own parts

Last Saturday I went to work & saw a water leak as I reversed into a parking bay.

I was greeted with scuffs & a missing washer jet cover

It must have happened in the hotel car park. I have had the T-cut out and the scuffs are gone, but there are a couple of scratches which will require a very light overpaint

I have a DE bumper from the one I broke a couple of years ago, which has a right hand side spray unit, so the broken & absent jet isn't a problem

Look like I need to source a s/h washer cover  :(

Yes, very frustrating

Where's the leak from - front of the car, near the centre, about where the radator is ?

Fitted new power steering pipe to the NG9-5 TTiD, together with a set of front discs & pads

All good

Well, it didn't last, so I dug deep for a new pipe and am fitting it now

The design has changed. Rather than have a metal shaping for where it clips into a plastic carrier, the pipe is no longer deformed and there is a rubber piece to perform the same job

Value engineering, or removing a stress point caused by the shaping ?
