So, got back home at 5:30pm. It's dark, it's -2° and we're surrounded by snow. Had some odd noises from the front of the car at low speed when I stopped at a couple of junctions just before home. Nothing else to do but remove front passenger side wheel and investigate. Quickly discovered it was brake-related, and sounded like some interference between the backplate and the disc. After 30 minutes of waggling the wheel and turning it, prising the backplate away etc, a small piece of road grit approximately a 3mm cube, showed itself.

There's a lot of it around here!
I had originally suspected that this was the issue, but felt honour-bound to investigate. I just wish the little blighter hadn't played hide and seek for half an hour!! At least the result was a bit of a relief.
