Occasionally, if I floor it in 4th or 5th, I'll experience a sort of porky-pig-style stutter in performance which, if I ease off slightly, will settle back to normal. I've not noticed any pattern to it and the car is always up to temperature before I drive it hard anyway. BTW the temp seems OK - the needle settles at about half way without any fluctuation. I've recently made the choice to only run it on BP's super unleaded and it's had a few full tanks of it so far but the car only gets used at weekends and mainly for short journeys so, since July 2014, I've probably only done about 2,000 miles.

I don't get an EML and when it was hooked up to a Tech2 last September time Leelac said there were no errors present although he said something like he could see the car had limited the power on several occasions as a sort of safeguard but he was in now way concerned.

I read another old thread on here about someone who was experiencing a similar power judder/stutter although theirs seemed more dramatic and one of the suggestions was to check the DI. I've just finished inspecting it and there is a crack in the outer plastic case on the underside but when I opened it up the inside seemed OK - in my previous 9-5 I had a failed DI and the resin that the dooberies (the bits that connect to the spark plugs) was badly cracked but in my current one it's fine. Does anyone know if this small crack in the outer casing of the DI that I have could cause any issues like I'm experiencing?

The best guess would be replace the DI and spark plugs, the small crack is somewhat irrelevant in that I've known DI failure with absolutely no apparent signs to show a failure. There are many other things it could be but without diagnostics it won't be something that you could probably resolve over the internet.

There have been a few failed DI cassettes that have the crack across the underside.  I think that the crack is caused by heat from sparks escaping from the "black cube".

Here's some annotated pictures of the DI cassette that failed.  When I checked the codes there were two or three that came up as "Pending" codes.  Ones that show that the number of misfires is approaching "too many".

The crack...

The other cracks and where to find them...

And the spark etching on the side...

Thanks both of you. Looks like it's time to purchase a new DI!

Incidentally, that other thread that I was reading (I can't find it again now!) mentioned to check the spark plugs to see if they black or wet with fuel as that can point to a failed/failing DI and/or CPS. Here's what my plugs looked like yesterday when I checked them...

Oops! Here it is...

As you can see the tip isn't black but the circular, bottom part of the plug is. Does this close the case of the knackered DI (or possibly the CPS)?

My four looked like this when I changed the DI after it failed.

Hard to say really, doesn't look healthy. Make sure you fit new plugs with the new DI though.

Anyways, it wasn't until I was about to chuck the old plugs in the bin that I noticed they were just Bosch ones!!!

That'd be the other common cause! I should have remembered that one. Very often it manifests about 3000 miles after fitting the wrong plugs.
