half an hour with a soldering iron to get loom for the unit sorted so into the car for a test, all powered up and I manged not to blow the OEM power amp so I obviously turned the pots on the on the amplifier interface the right way

the OEM denso unit has a GPS input from the shark fin, can anyone identify this type of  connector, I though they would use fakra on the GPS connector but looks not to be the case

Hey!
It's a GT5 female connector so you need a GT5 male to SMA male adapter. Assuming the GPS connector on your head unit is SMA rather than SMB or SMC.

The GPS aerial has a Fakra connector at the other end under the sharkfin.  You could run a longer cable from there.  I did that with the DAB & FM/AM aerials, but the new satnav I got (Kenwood) had the grey connector.

I've not had a problem with the adapter, head unt's getting a good strength signal.

€20 to save me the hassle of removing the headlining to run a cable to the sharkfin is €20 well spent

I didn’t remove the head lining.  I just tucked the wire under the edge and then ran it down the windscreen pillar.

Install went well, managed to avoid removing the glovebox to route cabling to passenger side A pillar with the assistance of a steel measuring tape. Sound is excellent and dab is a welcome addition, WiFi connection is not great but probably not helped by a neighbour parking his transit van in the  line of sight.

Manufacturer documentation states that the unit will only recognise usb thumb drives up to 64Gb but it is quite happy with a 128Gb drive, now need to work out how to get playlists to work as the stock music player app doesn't want to do anything with .m3u playlists.

I've found the manufacturers documentation for my unit next to useless. My email contact with them wasn't that much more informative either. I've found 2 connections for CBUS high and low listed on the sticker on the unit that aren't listed at all in any documentation.. Possibly of use for the steering wheel controls but I've no way of finding out without trial and error..

What have you used to get the steering wheel controls to work?

the unit uses the resistance approach, same as the one you have, so I tapped into the appropriate cabling in the steering wheel cowling then used the app on the unit to program different functions, stock music player app recognises key presses but can't get just playlists to respond

That's interesting, so you don't have the same issue with "CLEARED" randomly displaying on the SID with the accompanying bong! ?
If you get the chance would you mind measuring the voltage between each of your head unit key connections and ground?
