Honest John in The Saturday Telegraph often bemoans broken coil springs on modern Euroboxes which he attributes to the way the spring are manufactured and cut at the ends.  It is a very common problem, it seems.

Never realised Saab would give you new ones free?

I had mine swopped free of charge about 7 months ago then removed them to fit Eibach springs, I just wondered if Saab were still doing this as it may help others who did not know

I had Eibach springs on my Skoda Superb. Previous owner had put them on - I bought the car at 7500miles / 7 months, though one of the springs still snapped around 80,000 miles. Sure they were supposed to be guaranteed for life (not that I had any receipts!)

If SAAB do offer then it's still a good will gesture, I sent a few people to the main dealer to see if they'd do them for free but SAAB refused the claims so the car came back to us for fitting them.

Prior to my saab 93 conv, i owned a 03 Vectra ...... failed its last MOT with me, with both rear Coil springs broken. maybe an issue here with substandard GM parts !!!

2003-2006 Saab 9-3 Cars are being covered under warranty for FRONT springs if they break.  I have heard that if you have a 2007 as well and it's out of warranty they can put it through under the same code as the rest and it does not get bounced back.  That's the story here in the US anyway.
Also - gas caps here in the US now have a 10 Year 110,000 mile warranty as they have redesigned them yet again.

You have to go to dealer and ask service advisor if they would submit a SCR(special consideration report) for you, most of the time they are paid for or at least you may get a percentage paid for, however it largely depends on how long you've had the car and weather you've supported the saab network, ie had car serviced at correct intervals and at a saab dealer, this is called supporting the network and therefore you may receive goodwill.
This rule generally applies to all vehicle manufacturers not just saab!

Are after-market springs from names such as Koni or Spax any better, or are they just all made in the same factory and farmed out under these brands? Surely they must be different to the GM/SAAB ones?

Only I find it hard to believe that ALL springs are prone to breakages like this.

I see lots of broken springs on different makes of cars, most are caused by pot holes so I guess it's just down to luck of the draw or quality of steel used at the time by whoever makes the coil springs  ::)

saab refused to do mine or contribute to both of my broken coil springs last month.
after a dealer put in a special request for me.

car is a 9-3 vector conv 2005 37,000 miles.

seems that many snap around the 40k mile mark.

new springs with new top bearings cost me £265 i think at saab of fareham - an independant garage.
i wasn't about to give saab my money to fix their dodgey parts. should have been a recall imo.

SAAB paid for mine a couple of months ago

The main dealer was well aware of the problem and submitted a special request but started the work before he got the OK from SAAB. He even rpovided a courtesy car

Mine is an 06 9.3 convertible with 40k on the clock.

Your best option is to contact Saab uk themsleves explain the circumstances and quote that you have informaation from Saabscene site.

They will then look into etc.

Even though your local agent says they tried but got no joy doesnt mean that they even made the request.

Do it yourself and you will then know for sure.
