Replacing a manual with an auto box
« on: 07 June 2012, 01:54:16 PM »
I'm really enjoying my convertible, but wish I'd waited for one with an auto box.

I suspect I'll need a new clutch soon and was wondering whether to replace the gearbox with an auto box at that time.

Is it even possible?

Thanks,

Mike

As the saying goes, all things are possible but it's a lot of work. Not only would you have to get the box (that's the easy bit) but also as a starting list:
the selector mechanism & trim, ECU, brake pedal, wiring loom, blanking plates for the clutch slave and possibly a different engine management ECU. Ideally the way to do it would be to have a suitable donor car alongside yours.

The cheap way to do this is to sell the manual and buy an auto...

You are probably right, Audax.

Agreed, a doner car would be the best path to take, and the only way to get the full convenience and use from an auto box.

Another option would be to build a paddle shift system and bypass the whole trans ECU thing -- a couple guys have done that.
